Many of us are great at showing love and acceptance to the people around us.
Yet when it comes to offering that same love and acceptance to ourselves, it can feel surprisingly unfamiliar.
I witnessed this powerfully in a recent EFT session with a client who sought help for her chronic anxiety, overthinking, and burnout.
Even though expressions of love and affirmation are common from the western culture she's from, she was still taken aback when I guided her to repeat the words after me.
It happened during our session when we began tapping on the side of the hand while verbalising a setup statement...
"Even though I feel anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself."
As she repeated the words, “I love and accept myself,” there was a slight pause.
Then tears started to well in her eyes before she spoke again.
She realised she had never truly said those words to herself before.
It made her realise how she's been judging and criticising who she was all this time.
Then again...
How is this related to anxiety, you may ask?
Often, anxiety is not just about the situations we face externally, but also about the internal struggle happening within us. We resist, suppress, judge, or overthink what we feel. Instead of allowing the emotion to move through us, we end up fighting it internally.
Over time, that inner resistance can intensify feelings of anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and burnout. But when we begin to intentionally love and accept ourselves, including embracing what we feel, the internal struggle softens.
Tapping on the side of the hand while making an affirmative statement of intent helps to clear the resistance we are in.
Change begins when we finally offer ourselves the love, acceptance, and emotional safety we so freely give to others.
As for that client, she was able to experience greater ease and calm once the internal struggle dissolved.
Reflection question:
How often do you allow yourself to fully accept what you are feeling, without judging or trying to fix it immediately?
