MAKING AND MENTAL HEALTH. when I find it hard to settle, or when things feel a little stuck, I find myself returning to making: flower arranging, baking, playing the uke, etc. and without needing to think too hard about it all, something gets unstuck, space opens up again inside.
hands-on creation brings present moment grounding through tactile sensation, repetitive motion becomes a moving meditation to quiet the mind and come back into flow. sometimes it becomes a way to express without words what is stirring on the inside. we have a primal need to create with our hands. a way to reconnect to our innate capacity for creation. each tangible thing we create lights up the rewards circuit of our brain- the feel good factor is real.
there have been countless biohacking practices over the last decade, many of them involving deprivation, control, extremes. for me though, I love the idea that we can take the beauty path, the pleasure pathway to ease our hearts and minds with what we already have: our hands.
