Sleep-disordered breathing is often discussed in overly simple terms. Please be cautious of overly confident claims that a single dental or orthodontic treatment can “cure” sleep or breathing problems. 🌙🦷

The AAO white paper reminds sleep disordered breathing is a complex medical condition that cannot be reduced to just airway size or one orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontists have an important role in screening and referral, but definitive diagnosis and broader management require interdisciplinary care together with our medical colleagues.

Bottom line:
Sleep medicine is too important to oversimplify.
Be informed. Ask questions. Look for evidence-based, team-based care. 💙

A child’s smile is more than just teeth 🦷✨
It can affect how they feel when smiling, speaking, and making friends.

Some visible dental differences, like prominent front teeth, may sometimes be linked to teasing.

Orthodontic care is about supporting healthy growth, function, and confidence; at the right time, for the right reasons ❤️

An early orthodontic check can help families know what to monitor, when to act, and what’s best for their child 😊 reach out to any of us at .sg for more information today!!

Can palatal (or upper jaw) expansion really help with breathing? 🌬️✨

You may have seen claims that expanding the palate can “treat” sleep-disordered breathing; but the science is more nuanced.

The white paper from the American Association of Orthodontists notes that palatal expansion alone has not been shown to treat sleep-disordered breathing. However, it may be helpful in selected cases, especially when there is a true upper jaw constriction that needs to be corrected.

Every patient is different, and treatment should always be based on a proper assessment and diagnosis 😊

It’s completely normal to feel worried when you hear that extractions may be part of orthodontic plan.

Some patients may also be concerned that extractions will “make the airway smaller”. However, current evidence does not show that orthodontic extractions, when carefully planned, automatically lead to airway problems.

Extractions are never recommended lightly, and they are definitely not one-size-fits-all. For some patients, they may be needed to create space, improve the bite, support gum health, or help achieve a more stable long-term result.

Your orthodontist will always consider your teeth, jaws, facial profile, and treatment goals before recommending what is best for you.

Every smile is different, and every treatment plan should be thoughtfully personalised.

Consult an AOS orthodontist to find out more about what may be suitable for you!

This World Orthodontic Health Day, we’re celebrating a message close to our hearts: orthodontics goes beyond straight teeth.

A smile is part of how we eat, speak, laugh, and connect with the people around us. When teeth and jaws are well-aligned, it can support daily function, and help someone feel more comfortable and confident.

Orthodontic treatment is not about creating a “perfect” smile. It is about supporting health, confidence, and well-being in a way that feels right for each person.
