A list a chiropractor probably shouldn’t write, but here we go.

There’s a version of this profession that still operates on ideology rather than evidence. The claims inside are the ones that signal you’re standing in a clinic that hasn’t kept up. Or one that never tried.

The evidence-based wing of the profession retired most of these ideas decades ago. But they persist, because they sell. Lifelong care plans. Routine x-rays. Cures for non-musculoskeletal conditions. The mythology of the “subluxation.”

If a practitioner makes any of these five claims, walk. This applies anywhere, but especially in a market like Singapore where the regulatory floor is lower.

Save this carousel. Send it to anyone in Singapore who’s shopping for a chiropractor and isn’t sure how to evaluate what they’re hearing.

Most musculoskeletal problems rarely need imaging. Current clinical guidelines, internationally, are clear: routine x-rays in the absence of specific red flags do not improve outcomes.

But in Singapore, certain clinics x-ray every patient on the first visit, regardless of presentation. They use the images to build a case for long care plans, often described in vague terms like “spinal degeneration” or “phase three subluxation patterns” — phrases that have no clinical meaning outside that clinic’s marketing.

If your practitioner recommends imaging, ask three things: what specifically would the imaging change about my care, what clinical guideline supports imaging in my situation, and what happens if we proceed without it.

If the answers are vague, the imaging probably isn’t necessary.

Save this carousel for the next time someone in your network is told they need a full-spine x-ray series before any care can begin.

We offer the conversation first. No exam table. No commitment. 10-20 minutes, a coffee, and an honest assessment of whether chiropractic is the right path for you. Slots are limited.

About one in five coffee visits ends with us pointing someone to a GP, a strength coach, a physiotherapist, or a different specialist. We’re fine with that. Charging for an initial consultation before you’ve decided whether to work with us creates the wrong incentive.

We’d rather have an honest conversation with someone who never books a visit than an exam-table consultation with someone who feels obligated to.

If you’ve been wondering whether chiropractic is for you and weren’t sure where to start, this is it.

Twelve hours a day at a multi-monitor desk. Markets that start in Tokyo and close in New York. The injury that doesn’t show up until your forties. It starts in your thirties.

Forward head posture from screen focus. Rounded thoracic spine from sustained sitting. Internally rotated shoulders from mouse and keyboard. Hip flexors locked from twelve hours of seated flexion. The pattern repeats daily, in a job you cannot step away from.

A standing desk doesn’t undo years of mechanical pattern. An expensive chair doesn’t restore lost mobility. The body needs to be moved through the ranges of motion that desk work systematically removes.

If the symptoms in slide 4 are familiar, this is the carousel to save.

list a chiropractor probably shouldn’t write, but here we go.

There’s a version of this profession that wants every person who walks in to need treatment. That isn’t this practice. About one in five people who book a coffee with me end up not needing chiropractic care at all — they need a GP, a strength coach, a better mattress, or a different schedule. I tell them that.

If you’ve been wondering whether to see a chiropractor and none of the five reasons above apply to you, that’s probably your answer. If they do apply — address those first. I’ll still be here after.

Most expats with international health insurance in Singapore have chiropractic coverage built into their plan. Most never claim it. Usually because the first claim got rejected and they assumed they weren’t covered.

Two things cause almost every rejection: missing referral letter, or missing ICD codes on the receipt. Both fixable in a 90-second phone call to your insurer before your visit.

If you work for a bank, MNC, international school, or multinational law firm, your company plan probably covers this. Worth a check with HR.

Save this for the next time you’re considering treatment and want to know what you’re actually paying for.

“The business class spine” isn’t an official diagnosis. But anyone flying regional out of Singapore three or four times a month knows exactly what it feels like.

Long-haul travel can reduce thoracic mobility, dehydrate discs, and lock up the hips, disrupting the recovery your body needs to repair itself. Stack that with jet lag and a packed landing schedule, and the body never gets a reset window.

Most frequent flyers I see don’t need intensive treatment. They need a cadence — usually one visit a month is enough to keep the system from compounding.

If this is your life, the patterns above will be familiar. Worth addressing before they become structural.

The Expat Chiro is in Expat Living's roundup of the best chiropractors in Singapore. Pretty pleased about this one.
Finding chiropractic care you actually trust in a new country is one of the harder parts of expat life. That's the whole reason I built this practice the way I did. American-trained, US Board-certified, and run on the standards I'd expect for myself or my family.
If you've been into the clinic you know I don't only work on necks and backs. A big chunk of my week is the shoulder that started bothering you after tennis, the hip that's tight from too many hours at the laptop, the knee that's grumpy on your morning run.
First visits are 45 to 60 minutes. Pay per session, no packages, itemised receipts for insurance claims.
If you'd rather meet me before booking anything, I'm always up for a coffee at Baker & Cook in Dempsey. On me, no pressure.
