🚨 HIV Driving 1 in 5 Adult Deaths in Sierra Leone

New CHAMPS data reveals a silent crisis: 21% of adult deaths are linked to HIV, 65% were unaware of their status, and 70% of known cases were not on treatment. Urgent action is needed to close critical gaps in testing, awareness, and care, especially in Bo and Bombali districts.

Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance Sierra Leone (CHAMPS-SL) Begins ISO 15189:2022 Laboratory Accreditation Process in Makeni

Great news from Makeni!

CHAMPS-SL has officially commenced a four-day laboratory audit and accreditation process at the Makeni Regional Government Hospital Laboratory, starting 25-28 February 2026. The goal is to achieve accreditation under ISO 15189:2022, the international standard for quality and competence in medical laboratories.

A team of assessors from Kenya is currently reviewing key laboratory areas including Bacteriology, Molecular Biology, Parasitology, Mycobacteriology, Hematology, and Serology. Through document reviews, observation of tests, and staff interviews, the team is assessing the laboratory’s quality systems and technical competence.

This is a major milestone for Sierra Leone’s public health system. Achieving ISO 15189:2022 accreditation will strengthen laboratory systems, improve the reliability of scientific and clinical data, and enhance our understanding of maternal and child mortality and morbidity. It will also open doors for broader regional and international collaboration as well funding opportunities.

This process demonstrates CHAMPS-SL’s strong commitment to quality, evidence generation, and improving health outcomes for mothers and children across Sierra Leone.

From Hesitation to Hope: CHAMPS Empowers Communities to Fight Child Malnutrition Through Community-Led Nutrition

In Makama community, change is simmering in everyday kitchens. Through the CHAMPS Data-to-Action Food Demonstration Study in Bombali and Bo, mothers of under-five children are learning to prepare affordable, nutrient-rich meals using locally available ingredients. What began with hesitation is now transforming lives. “At first we were hesitant, but the local food condiments are helping our children grow fast,” one mother shared. By combining community-led nutrition education with strengthened frontline health systems, CHAMPS is tackling moderate acute malnutrition, one household at a time restoring hope, improving growth, and advancing child survival where it matters most.
