UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect and assist displaced people around the world and to help find lasting solutions for them. UNHCR West & Central Africa is operational in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central Africa Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger,

Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. We are also present in countries which are involved in West & Central Africa crises, such as Mauritania. Our teams in the region help people forced to flee their homes because of violence or persecution. They provide life-saving assistance to families seeking to return voluntarily, integrate locally or resettle in a third country. They also work to address the main causes of statelessness and intervene to ensure that stateless people or people at risk of statelessness can fully exercise their rights. UNHCR helps over a million people in need throughout the West & Central Africa sub-region.

A story sweeter than honey: on World Bee Day, we are lifting up local refugee communities in Kerfi, Chad, who make a living with beekeeping.

“We arrived in Kerfi, exhausted and empty-handed. The humanitarian assistance was insufficient, and we were desperate. But we didn't give up. With the support of UNHCR and partners, we formed a small group and embarked on traditional beekeeping to survive.”

Savings from honey production serve as emergency funds to create opportunities for community members.

In , despite ongoing arrivals, over 218,000 refugee children are now enrolled in school, many for the first time.

For most of them, going to school is no small achievement.

Some dream of becoming teachers, doctors, or engineers. Others are simply rediscovering what it means to be a child again.

And they’re not alone. 21,000 Chadian students are learning alongside them, building connections that go beyond the classroom.

In the Central African Republic, women like Francine and Prisca are rebuilding their lives after years of displacement.

Thanks to a support from EU International Partnerships, Francine, a mother of five, returned to Baoro after fleeing conflict in 2014. Today, she works in masonry, helping build homes for other returnees while supporting her own family.

"This is an opportunity for me to meet the basic needs of my family," she says.
