Strengthening Global Health Research Partnerships: A delegation from the SIMAD Institute for Global Health - SIGHt , SIMAD University led by Rector Dr Abdikarim Mohaidin Ahmed, visited the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine during their participation in the launch of the renewed UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST) research consortium.

The visit provided an opportunity for SIGHt and LSHTM leadership and researchers to discuss ongoing collaboration and explore opportunities to further strengthen joint work in public health research, institutional capacity strengthening, and evidence generation.

The discussions reaffirmed the growing collaboration between SIMAD University and LSHTM and a shared commitment to advancing locally relevant research, strengthening research capacity, and supporting evidence-based approaches to public health challenges in Somalia and other fragile and humanitarian settings.

Through continued international collaboration and locally grounded evidence, SIGHt and its partners are committed to contributing to stronger public health systems and improved preparedness for health emergencies in Somalia and beyond.

Why do proven health interventions sometimes fail when introduced in a new setting?

This important question was at the heart of our online public seminar on “Implementation Research in Global Health", hosted by the SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) in collaboration with the Center for Research and Development SIMAD University on 15th July 2026.

The seminar was delivered by Professor Daniel D. Reidpath (PhD), an experienced global health scholar whose work spans health systems, population health, equity, disease surveillance, and low-resource settings.

💡 A key message from the session:
A proven intervention does not automatically succeed everywhere.

Success depends on the realities of the setting—including health systems, logistics, infrastructure, culture, community acceptability, available resources, and access. These factors become even more critical in fragile, humanitarian, and conflict-affected settings such as Somalia.

The interactive discussion brought these ideas closer to the Somali context, highlighting the importance of adapting interventions to local realities and engaging the communities and institutions that shape how health programmes are received and implemented.

📌 Evidence tells us what can work. Implementation research helps us understand how, why, and under what conditions it can work in the real world.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Professor Daniel D. Reidpath for the insightful session and to everyone who joined and contributed to the discussion.

The SIMAD Institute for Global Health - SIGHt, SIMAD University, is proud to announce that it is part of a successful international consortium that has secured a major five-year NIHR-LMIC grant. The consortium is led by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and brings together the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the Pandemic Science Institute, University of Oxford, and a wide network of universities and public health organisations across sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

This is a significant achievement for SIGHt, SIMAD University, and Somalia. It reflects growing recognition of the important role Somali institutions can play in global health research and creates a valuable opportunity to strengthen disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness, and applied public health research in Somalia and beyond.

Through this partnership, SIGHt will contribute to collaborative work in infectious disease epidemiology, diagnostics, genomics, One Health, and rapid research to support preparedness and response. Over the next five years, the consortium will help strengthen research capacity, improve the use of evidence for public health action, and support more effective surveillance systems in fragile and low-resource settings.
SIGHt looks forward to working closely with consortium partners to advance impactful research, strengthen health security, and support more resilient health systems in Somalia and across affected regions.

The SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) at SIMAD University successfully concluded a 6-day training on Data Analysis and Visualization Using R and Excel, facilitated by Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.

The training focused on strengthening practical competencies in data management, statistical analysis, and data visualization using R and Microsoft Excel.

In line with SIGHt’s commitment to supporting the broader research community in Somalia, participation was extended to individuals from higher education institutions beyond SIMAD University. Through such initiatives, SIGHt continues to support research capacity building and professional development.

Pleased to share that the Director of SIGHt presented our work on antimicrobial resistance in fragile Somali health systems at the ESCMID Global Congress 2026 in Munich, representing SIMAD University and the SIMAD Institute for Global Health.

Developed through a hands-on research methods course with our medical students (Muna Sheikh Mohamed, Musab Mohamud Ahmed, Omar Abdullahi Abdi, Muna Ibrahim Hassan, Mohamed Ali Ibrahim, and Najma Hashim Sayid Macani), this project demonstrates how student-led research can inform practice in humanitarian settings.

Training Completed: GIS for Health and Research

The SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) successfully concluded a two-day technical training on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Health and Research, held on 15–16 February 2026 at the Executive Classroom, SIMAD University – Town Campus.

The training was facilitated by Mr. Liban Hassan Mohamed, with a focus on strengthening analytical capacity in the application of GIS within public health and research contexts. The program combined conceptual foundations with structured practical sessions to ensure both technical proficiency and applied understanding.

Key Focus Areas

Participants engaged in comprehensive sessions covering:

Spatial data collection, management, and analysis

Geographic mapping techniques for public health applications

Disease distribution mapping and epidemiological pattern analysis

Health service accessibility and planning

Data visualization to support research reporting and policy development

SIGHt: Advancing Ethical Leadership in Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare

The SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt) successfully concluded a two-day professional workshop on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Ethics in Healthcare, held on 17th–18th February at SIMAD University – Town Campus.

The workshop examined the structured integration of ethical and governance frameworks within healthcare technologies, emphasizing the responsible deployment of AI systems in clinical, research, and public health contexts. Discussions focused on safeguarding patient rights while strengthening innovation capacity.

Core Thematic Areas

The training addressed key pillars of ethical digital health transformation:

Protection of patient safety and health data privacy

Transparency and accountability in algorithmic systems

Mitigation of bias and promotion of fairness in AI decision-making

Governance structures for sustainable digital health implementation
