This landmark legislation represents a major victory for the disability movement and a powerful commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities in Somalia.

At Disability Aid Foundation (DAF), we recognize that the launch of the law is not the end of the journey, it is the beginning of a new chapter. The real success will be measured by how effectively the law is implemented, ensuring that persons with disabilities have equal access to education, employment, healthcare, justice, and public services.

We commend the Government of Somalia, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), civil society, and development partners whose collective efforts made this achievement possible.

DAF remains committed to supporting the implementation of the law and advancing an inclusive Somalia where no one is left behind.

Together, let us turn rights into reality.

Driving Global Action for Disability-Inclusive Humanitarian Coordination

Disability Aid Foundation (DAF) proudly participated in the LNOB Phase 4 Global Workshop on Disability Inclusive Humanitarian Coordination held in Douala, Cameroon, a transformative five-day global engagement that brought together OPDs, humanitarian actors, and disability inclusion champions from across different countries.

The workshop created a strong platform for collaboration, peer learning, and strategic reflection on strengthening disability-inclusive humanitarian systems and ensuring meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in emergency response and coordination mechanisms.

Throughout the five days, participants explored critical thematic areas including humanitarian coordination, country-context presentations, humanitarian reset discussions, key informant interview findings, disability-inclusive data systems, OPD engagement and leadership, uptake and localization of tools and guidance, inclusive food security training approaches, marketplace learning sessions, peer exchange discussions, and strategic planning beyond LNOB.

The exchange of experiences and practical approaches highlighted the growing importance of localization, accessibility, evidence-based advocacy, and strengthening the leadership role of OPDs within humanitarian action.

DAF was honored to represent Somalia along other sister OPDs and contribute perspectives from the Somali context while learning from global experiences and innovative inclusive humanitarian practices from fellow participants and partners.

We extend our appreciation to all organizers, facilitators, partners, and participating OPDs for their commitment to advancing inclusive humanitarian coordination where truly no one is left behind.

Together, we continue to empower, include, and transform lives through inclusion.

Todayโ€™s LNOB Phase 4 workshop sessions focused on reviewing Key Informant Interview (KII) findings and strengthening disability-inclusive humanitarian coordination across participating countries in East, Central and West Africa.

The presentations highlighted important progress made through the โ€œLeave No One Behindโ€ initiative in advancing the meaningful participation of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) within humanitarian coordination mechanisms. Discussions explored how disability inclusion practices are progressing within humanitarian coordination systems and how OPDs are gaining greater confidence and improved capacities to engage in humanitarian action.

The workshop also examined findings from East, Central and West Africa on coordination participation, inclusion, and progress against LNOB indicators related to OPD engagement and inclusive coordination. Participants reflected on existing barriers affecting meaningful participation, including accessibility challenges, communication gaps, stigma, and limited resources, while also discussing practical recommendations for stronger inclusion and localization.

Another important focus of the sessions was the planning for Result 1 finalization, tools uptake, scaling, and localization strategies to ensure sustainability and stronger country-level ownership. The discussions emphasized the need for accessible and inclusive coordination mechanisms, stronger partnerships between OPDs and humanitarian actors, sustainable capacity strengthening, and data-driven advocacy to ensure no one is left behind.

Participants acknowledged that OPDs are increasingly being recognized as important humanitarian actors and partners, contributing meaningfully to coordination meetings, advocacy efforts, capacity building, and inclusive programming.

Disability Aid Foundation - DAF is proud to represent Somalia with other sister OPDs from Somalia and OPDs from Uganda, Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and South Sudan in these important regional discussions and remains committed to advocating for inclusive humanitarian systems where persons with disabilities actively participate in decision-making and humanitarian response.

Together, we move closer toward a more accessible, inclusive, and equitable humanitarian future for all.

At Disability Aid Foundation - DAF, we strongly believe that sustainable development can only be achieved when everyone has a seat at the table including persons with disabilities.

Across Somalia, many community decisions are traditionally made through dialogue and consultation. However, persons with disabilities are often left out of these important discussions, despite being among those most affected by social, economic, and humanitarian challenges.

Through our advocacy and community engagement initiatives, DAF continues to promote meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in local decision-making processes. When communities come together elders, women, youth, and persons with disabilities solutions become more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.

Inclusion is not charity. It is a right, a responsibility, and a pathway to stronger communities.

Let us continue working together to ensure that no voice is unheard and no one is left behind.

Disability Aid Foundation - DAF Participates in High-Level Legal Seminar on Ending FGM.

Disability Aid Foundation (DAF) proudly participated in the legal seminar titled โ€œBridging the Gap: Enhancing SRHR Access and Justice in Somali Communities,โ€ held in Mogadishu.

The seminar brought together policymakers, religious leaders, and journalists to strengthen advocacy efforts for the passage of the FGM Bill at the federal level. Abdirahman Jeilani represented Disability Aid Foundation (DAF) at this important forum, contributing to discussions on inclusive Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and the protection of vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls with disabilities.

During the engagement, DAF reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that national legal reforms and protection mechanisms are inclusive and accessible to women and girls with disabilities, who often face heightened risks and additional barriers in accessing justice and essential services. Disability inclusion must remain central in the advancement of laws and policies aimed at ending harmful practices.

We commend Sweden, Ifrah Foundation , and International Rescue Committee for convening this critical dialogue and for their continued commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of Somali girls and women.

Together, we stand for protection, inclusion, and justice for all.

Today marks an important moment with the election of the leadership of Somaliaโ€™s Independent Human Rights Commission.

We congratulate the newly elected leadership: Drs. Mariam Qassim~Chief Commissioner, Mohamed Harun~ Deputy Chief Commissioner and Fadumo Abdikani~ Secretary of the Commission.

The election of Mohamed Harun, a visually impaired leader, is a powerful milestone for persons with disabilities in Somalia and a clear demonstration that inclusive leadership is possible and necessary.

Disability Aid Foundation- DAF proudly contributed to this national process. Notably, Abdirahman Jeilani served on the Technical Selection Panel, helping to ensure a transparent, fair, and inclusive selection of the nine Commissioners.

This achievement reflects sustained advocacy for disability-inclusive governance and strengthens the foundation for human rights and equal representation for all.
