HIV Discordant couple ( meaning one partner is living with HIV while the other is HIV-negative).
🔹The man is HIV-positive (HIV +
🔹The woman is HIV-negative (HIV -
She’s pregnant, and the baby is also marked HIV-negative (HIV -
1. U=U (Undetectable = Untransmitable ):
If the HIV-positive partner is on treatment (ARVs) and maintains an undetectable viral load, they cannot pass HIV to their partner or their baby.
2. Safe conception is possible_ :
Couples where one partner is HIV-positive can have HIV-negative children with the right medical support, such as ARV treatment, PrEP for the negative partner, and proper antenatal care.
3. Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT):
Even if a pregnant mother is HIV-positive, being on treatment greatly reduces the risk of passing HIV to the baby during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding. Since the woman is HIV-negative, the baby automatically remains HIV-negative.
NB:
HIV doesn’t stop people from having healthy relationships, families, and HIV-negative babies treatment and prevention make it possible.
