Adenoid hypertrophy.
Adenoid is the mass of lymphoid tissue located behind the nasal cavity. It is the part of the immune system that recognizes and traps some pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses.
When it gets enlarged, it is called adenoid hypertrophy. It is most common in children, ranging from 3-7 years. The child may present to you with these symptoms below:
1. Snoring
2. Nasal airways obstruction
3. Difficulty in swallowing
4. Open mouth breathing (adenoid facies)
Work ups:
1. CBC
2. Coagulation profile
3. Imagings (X-ray, CT, and MRI)
Management:
Removal of adenoid by doing surgery (adenoidectomy or adenotonsilectomy)
