HEALTH AWARENESS MESSAGE

FROM: EAGLE 🦅 FAM CLINIC

Dear Community Members of Gogrial and Beyond,

Today we’re discussing Viral Hepatitis: A, B, C, D & E. There are many types of hepatitis viruses and while their symptoms can be similar, their transmission and prevention methods differ. There are also many myths circulating in our community about how people get infected and how to protect themselves.

• Transmission:

- Hepatitis A & E: Spread through contaminated food and water due to poor sanitation.
- Hepatitis B, C & D: Spread through contact with infected blood, unprotected s*x, sharing sharp objects like razors or blades, and from mother to child during birth. Note: Hepatitis D only infects those already infected with Hepatitis B.

• Common Symptoms:

- Yellow eyes/skin, dark urine, fatigue, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.
- Some people may experience no symptoms at all.

• Prevention:

1. Vaccination: There’s a safe and effective vaccine for Hepatitis A and B. Though not available at the Eagle Fam Clinic.
2. Safe Water & Food: Wash your hands, drink clean water, and eat well-cooked food.
3. Safe Practices: Avoid sharing blades, needles, or toothbrushes. Use new, sterile equipment.
4. Testing: Know your status. Testing is the only way to be certain- Available at Gogrial PHCC and other medical clinics like Eagle Fam.
5. Antenatal Care: Pregnant mothers should get tested to protect their baby.

• Treatment:
Hepatitis is treatable. Hepatitis B and C now have effective treatments and cures though in an advance medical centres. Don’t wait or believe myths. Early treatment prevents liver damage.

• MYTHS TO STOP:
1. Hepatitis isn’t spread through hugging or sharing food; it’s only transmitted by B, C, D and E types.
2. There is no treatment for hepatitis; however, it’s available.
3. Hepatitis isn’t exclusive to bad people; anyone can be exposed.

We offer testing, counselling and referral services at affordable prices for everyone.

Malaria is not Typhoid:
“I have decided to clear this common myths about the two common diseases in our communities across South Sudan"

By Albino Alich Kur Anei,
CEO Eagle Fam Clinic,
Gogrial Town-GWC

With my working experiences in different health facilities and private clinics, there’s this common phrase I hear every day in our community and clinics as well; “I have been diagnosed with Malaria Typhoid.” The truth is, there is no disease called “Malaria Typhoid”.

Malaria and Typhoid are two completely different diseases with different causes, symptoms and treatments as well . Mixing them up puts lives at risk.

Why this confusion is dangerous.

Across South Sudan and Africa at large, 3-5 diseases are very common and some mostly kills if left untreated. Malaria, Pneumonia, Ulcers, Typhoid, Diarrhea, and many others. Each one has its own cause and its own treatment. When patients say “Malaria Typhoid” instead of “Malaria and Typhoid”, they often expect one drug to cure both. That leads to wrong treatment and drug misuse.

The facts plain and simple is below 👇🏼

1. Malaria Cause: Parasite spread by the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito not a virus. Prevention: Sleep under Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets LLINs, clear stagnant water, keep surroundings clean. Treatment: Only anti-malarial drugs prescribed after a lab test.

2. Typhoid Fever, Cause: Bacteria called Salmonella Typhi, not a virus. It comes from contaminated food and water. Prevention: Drink treated/boiled water, wash hands, eat hot, clean food. Treatment: Specific antibiotics prescribed by a qualified health worker.

3. Pneumonia & Diarrhea: Pneumonia is often caused by bacteria or viruses and attacks the lungs. Diarrhea is usually waterborne and causes dehydration. Both need different management and both can kill quickly in children if untreated.

4. Ulcers: An ulcer is a painful open sore that develops on the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or esophagus (peptic ulcers). They form when stomach acids damage the protective lining.

The two most common causes are H. pylori bacterial infection and long-term use of pain relievers like NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, aspirin as well as acidic food and coffeine drinks). Treatment focuses on eliminating the root cause to allow your stomach lining to heal and prevent complications through antibiotics.

What we must do as a community:
• Learn the difference:
One test result does not mean “one disease”. You can have Malaria and Typhoid at the same time. That’s “Malaria and Typhoid”, not “Malaria Typhoid”

• Test before treatment: Visit health facilities with qualified health workers for proper diagnosis. Don’t self-diagnose.

• Don’t misuse drugs: Never take antibiotics or anti-malarials without a doctor’s prescription. Wrong drugs create resistance and make future treatment harder.

• Prevent first: Clean water, clean food, nets, and hygiene save more lives than any drug.

As health professionals at Eagle Fam Clinic, our job is to educate and sensitize you. Don’t hesitate to attend facilities with trained staffs, ask questions about your diagnosis and follow the full treatment given.

“Your health, our priority".
Let’s stop the myths and save lives together.
