January 23, 2025, marks the official enforcement of the Marriage Equality Act, or the "Act Amending the Civil and Commercial Code (No. 24), B.E. 2567 (2024)." This law grants individuals of all gender identities the equal right to register their marriages under the law.
The Marriage Equality Act was published in the Royal Gazette in September last year, with a 120-day grace period to allow relevant authorities to amend regulations accordingly. For instance, the Ministry of Interior's regulations on family registration have been revised to replace terms such as "man-woman" with "person" and "husband-wife" with "spouse." These changes take effect on January 23, 2025.
The journey to achieving marriage equality has spanned over a decade. The draft of this law was approved in its first reading by the Thai House of Representatives in December 2023. It then received final approval from the Senate in June 2024, was announced in the Royal Gazette three months later, and officially comes into effect today.
