- Why publications matter for your career

When MS or PhD graduates apply for jobs, internships, or doctoral programs, employers and universities do not only look at the degree, GPA, or standardized English score. There is another group of well-recognized concrete outputs: academic publications.

A conference paper or journal article shows evidence of a research process. It shows that the student has made plans to conduct a study, carried out that plan, analyzed the data, written about the research work scientifically, and allowed the work to be viewed by the public.

* In universities, publications also matter because they contribute to research output, reputation, and rankings.
* In research teams, a record of publications can strengthen grant applications.
* In some government systems, publications may also support promotion.
* In consultancy or technical advisory work, publications can signal that a person’s expertise has been tested through external review.

This is the advantage of a training program that enables its graduates to publish as a part of the training process. At our Department, MS students complete a thesis and usually produce a conference paper and (where possible) journal article(s). PhD students are required to publish one or more journal articles. Publication references are not just additional information on the resume. They serve as tangible proofs of the ability to implement a research plan, analyze the data, draft and revise a manuscript, and communicate with scientific journals.
