The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program (SGP) is a project implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MTE). The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) by providing technical and financial support to projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing community well-being and livelihoods.

With support from the UNDP GEF SGP, the local NGO Catholic Medical Association of Timor-Leste (CMATL) is implementing the “Healthy Ainaro: Improve Medical Waste Management in the Health Facility in Ainaro” project. This initiative has brought significant improvements to healthcare facilities in the Cassa Health Center in Ainaro.

Through this collaboration, a proper medical waste management system was successfully established to protect public health, safeguard healthcare workers, and prevent severe environmental contamination. The project has directly benefited 40 health staff members and approximately 40 local households, demonstrating a tangible contribution toward safer, environmentally responsible waste disposal.
Dr. Leocadia Nazare Fonseca, a Head of the health center, highlighted the three primary waste categories managed daily: general waste, infectious waste, and sharps waste. She explained that medical waste is strictly divided into infectious waste (mostly originating from blood) and sharps waste (mostly consisting of used needles).

♻️ Strengthening Healthcare Professionals’ Knowledge on Medical Waste Management 🏥🌿

On 25 August 2026, the Catholic Medical Association of Timor-Leste (CMATL) conducted a medical waste management training and refresher session for approximately 100 healthcare professionals.

Through the GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is partnering with CMATL to strengthen awareness and knowledge on responsible medical waste management.

The session provided healthcare professionals with an opportunity to refresh and strengthen their knowledge on medical waste management, with particular attention to the importance of proper medical waste segregation and storage, and the role of healthcare professionals in promoting safer practices within healthcare settings.

This activity also helped raise awareness of the potential risks that improper medical waste management can pose to healthcare workers, patients, communities and the environment.

🌱 Through continued education and awareness, we can strengthen safer healthcare practices while contributing to the protection of public health and our environment.
