BACK PAIN? DON’T JUST PUSH THROUGH IT.‼️
Back pain is more than just an uncomfortable feeling. It can affect how you move, how you work, how you sleep, how you exercise, and even how you enjoy everyday life.
Whether it started after lifting something heavy, sitting for long hours, exercising, an injury, or seemingly “out of nowhere,” back pain can have many different causes.
Common causes may include muscle strain and muscle spasms, disc prolapse, arthritis, sciatica, and other conditions affecting the spine and surrounding tissues. Sometimes the source of the pain isn’t obvious — which is why simply treating the pain without understanding the cause may not address the underlying problem.
🩺 WHY GET ASSESSED?
A proper assessment can help identify where your pain is coming from, what may be contributing to it, and how it is affecting your movement and function.
An assessment is especially important if your back pain is:
🔹 Associated with pain, numbness, tingling, burning or weakness down the leg
🔹 Persistent or getting worse
🔹 Limiting your movement or daily activities
🔹 Affecting your sleep or work
🔹 Returning repeatedly
🔹 Making it difficult to exercise or stay active
💊 UNDERSTANDING THE World Health Organization (WHO) PAIN LADDER
Pain management is not simply about taking the strongest painkiller available. The WHO analgesic ladder provides a general framework for escalating pain relief according to the severity of pain and the individual’s needs.
🟢 Step 1 — Mild pain
Non-opioid pain relief, such as paracetamol or appropriate anti-inflammatory medicines, may be considered when suitable.
🟡 Step 2 — Moderate pain
Stronger analgesic strategies may be considered, sometimes including weak opioids, depending on the individual situation.
🔴 Step 3 — Severe pain
Strong opioids may be considered for selected patients under appropriate medical supervision.
⚠️ Important: The pain ladder is a general framework, not a prescription or a requirement to move through every step.
Modern pain management also emphasises treating the underlying cause, maintaining appropriate activity, rehabilitation, and using non-drug approaches whenever appropriate.
Medication should be selected based on the individual’s condition, medical history, risks, and other medicines the individual may be taking.
🏃♀️ PAIN MANAGEMENT IS MORE THAN MEDICATION
Depending on the cause of your back pain, management may include:
🔹 Education and advice
🔹 Exercise and rehabilitation
🔹 Improving movement and physical function
🔹 Activity modification
🔹 Appropriate pain-relieving medication
🔹 Addressing contributing factors
🔹 Further investigation or referral when necessary
Getting assessed early can help you understand your condition and take the right steps toward managing your pain and improving your movement.
You don’t have to simply accept back pain as part of getting older, working hard, or staying busy. Your body is giving you a signal — listen to it.
At Phoenix Medical Centre, our goal is to provide a thorough assessment and develop a personalised treatment approach based on your individual needs.
