🌿 Starting this week, IMG group practice will be taking a short pause as we transition to a new practice space.

As we move into this next chapter, this may also be an opportunity to deepen your own personal practice at home. Your practice doesn’t need to be perfect — even a few minutes of mindful breathing, gentle movement, or quiet sitting each day can help keep your energy grounded and flowing.

If you’d like materials to support for your personal practice during this break, you can explore these online resources:
https://dharmadrumretreat.org/teachings/

We’d also love to hear from you 💛
During this time, we invite everyone to share your reflections of practicing Chan in daily life in the comments below.

Let's keep practice together in another form. We’ll be back on the mat together very soon. 🙏

☀️ May Group Practice – Bringing Mindfulness into Everyday Life 🌿

This May, join us each Saturday for group practice and discover that Chan practice is not separate from daily life—it can be found in every movement, every breath, and every simple task.

Our recent practice concluded with working meditation, where participants helped tidy the monastery with mindful awareness. Many experienced a deep sense of peace and healing, realizing that even everyday chores can become part of the path.

As Fashi shared:
“Tidying, walking, talking, pondering, exploring, smelling—each act polishes the Buddha-nature within and without.”

Whether you are new to meditation or have practiced before, you are warmly welcome to join us. No registration needed.

🧧Another participant shared her reflection on participating in the One-day Retreat from a different perspective:

On Feb. 7, I joined a one-day meditation retreat at the New Taipei Branch of Dharma Drum Mountain. Although I have attended many retreats before, this was my first experience practicing entirely in English. The change of language slowed me down and gently brought me back to my breath and the present moment.

The retreat was guided by Venerable Guo-Chii. Grounded in the Dharma and using English as a medium, she offered the teachings to practitioners—a truly twofold effort. Her fluent and gentle guidance created a deep sense of calmness and reassurance.

Many of the participants were young people from different countries. Despite their diverse backgrounds, everyone practiced quietly and sincerely, creating a simple yet focused atmosphere.

One young man, Bruce from Scotland, just over twenty years old and attending his first retreat, particularly moved me. During the sharing session, he spoke about the calm that meditation brought him. Although physical discomfort sometimes interrupted his practice, he remembered the teacher’s instruction—to return to the breath, again and again.

In that moment, I could not help but reflect on myself in my early twenties. At that age, I would never have imagined approaching meditation or the Dharma in this way.

A natural sense of respect arose—for this young man, and for his simple, sincere heart.

With the New Year approaching, it feels like a time for new beginnings and setting intentions. This English meditation retreat became, for me, a gentle reminder—to make use of my English skills, to follow Venerable Guo-Chii’s example, and to practice giving in everyday life, allowing this intention to unfold gently toward wholeness.

Sending our warmest wishes to all our IMG friends for a happy and content Chinese New Year! 🧧✨

On Feb. 7, IMG held our first one-day retreat of 2026. Some of our practitioners generously shared their reflections with us. We’re grateful to share the following reflection from Apple Florence:

The blessed ‘practitioners’
It’s my pleasure to experience the retreat for the first time alongside FaShi. Everyone finds FaShi to be incredibly open-minded, and her approach to leading is both fun and relaxing. This atmosphere really helps everyone unwinds during meditation and deepens our understanding of Chan meditation.

About moving meditation
In the moving meditation, FaShi posed thought-provoking questions rooted in Chan philosophy. These questions, such as ‘Where is your mind?’ or ‘Where is your Chintamani jewel within you?’, encouraged us not only to move, but also to reflect deeply. This approach transformed the practice from mere physical exercise into a meaningful, introspective journey.

About yoga practice
Additionally, we explored yoga practices that included both seated and standing poses, as well as unwinding yoga. These practices offered valuable insights into Chan meditation, showing that it’s not solely about sitting still. This holistic approach enriched my understanding and made the retreat an enriching experience. I feel both fortunate and grateful to have been part of it.

We are thankful for everyone who joined this retreat and for the heartfelt reflections shared. May the new year continue to bring clarity, mindfulness, and growth to us all.
