It's easier to suppress our emotions than to face them head on. Truly facing how we feel can make us squirm. It can feel raw, vulnerable, and deeply uncomfortable.
When we are triggered, the emotions that arise can rattle our nervous system. They may push us into fight, flight or freeze mode, creating inner turbulence and unrest.
In moments of panic, anxiety, worry, fear, or anger, many of us instinctively want immediate relief. We want to get rid of the discomfort as quickly as possible and return to a state that feels "normal," "calm," or "peaceful."
So we meditate, exercise, or distract ourselves. We reach for whatever helps us settle.
But if we soothe the nervous system without returning to the emotions that were triggered, we miss an opportunity for deeper healing.
Because the next time a similar trigger appears, the same alarm will ring again. The discomfort resurfaces, and the unease returns.
The cycle repeats until we have the courage to sit with what we are feeling, gently turn toward it, and to explore what is truly asking to be seen, heard, and healed.
