People only change when they feel like it.

One of the hardest lessons in life is accepting that no amount of pleading, arguing, loving, rescuing, or sacrificing can make another person change if they are not ready.

Real change happens when a person becomes aware of their behavior, takes responsibility for it, and decides for themselves that things need to be different.

This doesn’t mean people can’t grow—it means growth cannot be forced. You can offer support, encouragement, and opportunities, but the decision to change must come from within.

A Subtle Relationship Mistake

From a therapist’s perspective, one common but often unrecognized relationship dynamic is when a wife slowly shifts from being a partner to taking on a mothering role toward her husband. While this usually begins with care, responsibility, or love, it can quietly alter the emotional balance of the relationship.

When a wife starts over-functioning—managing emotions, decisions, routines, and even accountability—the husband may unconsciously slip into a dependent or childlike position. Intimacy, attraction, and mutual respect often decline because desire does not thrive in a parent–child dynamic.

Over time, the husband (now psychologically positioned as the “son”) may begin to reject, resent, or emotionally discard the wife, much like an adolescent pushing away a mother to assert autonomy.
