Farrowing is the process of giving birth in pigs. After farrowing, it’s essential to take good care of the sow and her piglets to ensure their health and well-being. Here are three important things to do after farrowing:

1. Provide a Safe and Clean Environment

· Ensure the farrowing pen is clean, dry, and free from drafts.
· Provide adequate bedding, such as straw or sand, to keep the piglets warm and comfortable.
· Check the temperature in the farrowing pen to ensure it’s within the ideal range (around 80°F to 85°F) for piglets.

2. Monitor the Sow’s and Piglets’ Health

· Check the sow’s overall health, including her appetite, water intake, and stool quality.
· Monitor the piglets for signs of stress, disease, or injury, such as labored breathing, lethargy, or wounds.
· Ensure the piglets are nursing properly and receiving adequate colostrum from the sow.

3. Provide Adequate Nutrition and Hydration

· Ensure the sow has access to fresh water and a balanced diet that meets her nutritional needs.
· Provide the piglets with a warm, safe, and accessible area for nursing.
· Consider providing supplemental heat sources, such as heat lamps or heat mats, to keep the piglets warm, especially during the first few days after farrowing.

By following these steps, you can help ensure the health and well-being of the sow and her piglets after farrowing.
