Today I’m taking some time for myself to do some important personal work around my relationship with my father.

Coincidentally, yesterday was Father’s Day.

I turned 65 recently. My dad died when I was twelve. I have felt resolved and at peace about the fact that he died when I was so young, for decades.

AND — this also is true: I have been astounded by all the unfinished emotional business I have discovered in my own heart regarding my dad and how his early death has had a lifelong negative impact on me.

Feeling incredibly helped, guided, supported, relieved, grateful and lighter, as I complete this latest work with my dad.

Want to know specifically what’s changed, exactly how this process helps? —
Feel free to direct message me or leave a comment.

I appreciate Kylie having me as a guest on her podcast today. She’s a life coach who has a particular passion for discovering ways to inspire moms with kids at home who find life overwhelming at times.

Anytime we wish something quite important to us could have been different, or better, or more, that’s a grief event.

I had so many moments like that when my kids were still at home. I share about one of those pivotal moments in this podcast that was the beginning of my gaining an awareness that maybe I lacked some necessary tools to process regrets and painful events. Those moments can tend to stack up!

Podcast · Kylie Cross · Join me for an honest conversation about walls I've over come and learning to overcome still. I will share from my own life and experiences in hope that it might inspire you to go beyond the walls in your way and create the life you really want!

With the help of so many wonderful supporters, we now have a beautifully published Ukrainian translation of the bestseller, The Grief Recovery Handbook by John James and Russell Friedman, Відновлення після втрат.

I invite you to read our final update on the Go Fund Me page, where you can see our financial accounting and more photos. Please do not donate again to this page as we will close it down soon. We couldn't be more pleased!

A participant in one of my recent online support groups was visiting Brussels and walked by a store called On and On and snapped this photo for our group. 😁

In grief recovery we try to raise awareness about the behaviors we engage in for the purpose of distracting ourselves from unpleasant negative emotions. Shopping is one of them. We call these coping mechanisms "Short Term Energy-Relieving Behaviors," or STERBS for short. My go-to from childhood has been busy-ness, or workaholism -- packing my schedule (hopefully with good things), which keeps me from dwelling on the huge playlist of negative thoughts which seem ever-ready to run in my brain when given a moment of stillness.

One of the greatest benefits of doing this important personal work for me has been learning how to get to the root of my energy-sapping playlist and turn it off. After learning how to take correct actions to face what I didn't even realize I was running from, and practicing them over time, I find that now I can enjoy being still and in the present moment.

There's nothing inherently wrong with shopping, of course (provided we're not spending beyond our means 😆which can be a great temptation at this gift-giving season!); and there are going to be naturally busy seasons in life. Most Short Term Energy-Relieving Behaviors are like that. Sometimes it's good to distract ourselves from painful thoughts -- but if I never learn the skills to "complete" any emotional unfinished business in my heart, that's when these behaviors can become life-limiting.

I've been meaning to do this for a long time. Finally recorded a 5-minute video on the topic of Short-term Energy-relieving behaviours for my online Grief Recovery Method® groups.

I made this five-minute video for my online Grief Recovery Method® groups to reinforce what we're learning together from The Grief Recovery Handbook and our ...

I'm proud of us. On screen, these are Grief Recovery Method® Specialists from Vladivostok to Novosibirsk to St. Petersburg and Moscow. There are more in each city, not shown in this photo. Vladimir, whose face, sadly, is not illuminated in this screen shot from this past Saturday, is Ukrainian; he has taken refuge in Riga, Lativa for the moment. All our lives are affected by the war in Ukraine, in wildly different ways. We are on opposite sides of the conflict. We are managing to continue to work together and support one another in an effort to help the countless people who are suffering from grief and loss of so many kinds, on both sides of the border.

Grief could be thought of as a form of learning.

That's my favorite takeaway from a very interesting webinar in a series I will now be sure to follow, presented by the Friends of the Semel Institute at UCLA.

Entitled, "The Grieving Brain," it reaffirmed for me how sound the Grief Recovery Method® continues to be, in light of emerging neuroscientific discoveries.

Below: Dr. Mary-Francis O'Connor, neuroscientist and professor at the University of Arizona, and Dr. Brenda Bursch, on staff at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
