My baby is in the NICU. Can I still breastfeed?”

Yes.

❤️ And sometimes, the breastfeeding journey simply starts differently.

For some NICU babies, direct breastfeeding may not be possible right away. You may begin by expressing breastmilk and providing it for your baby in another way, while working with the healthcare team towards breastfeeding when your baby is ready.

Along the way, there may also be opportunities for skin-to-skin, expressing support, and learning what works for your baby.

So if your baby isn't at the breast yet, remember:
Not yet doesn't mean never. 🤱🏾

Your breastfeeding journey doesn't have to look like someone else's to still be a breastfeeding journey.

And you don't have to figure it out alone.

Dear Mama,

I know this isn't how you imagined feeding your baby.
Maybe you imagined holding them close.
Looking into their eyes.

Feeling those tiny hands against you.
Instead, you're expressing milk beside an incubator.
Watching someone else give your baby the milk you worked so hard to provide.
And perhaps sometimes it feels like you're missing something.

But Mama...
You are not missing from your baby's feeding story.
Your milk is there.
Your voice is there.
Your touch is there.
Your presence is there.

And when the day comes that your baby is ready to feed at your breast, you'll have another beautiful chapter to add.

Until then...

One expressed drop.
One touch.
One visit.
One day at a time.

You're still Mama.

And you're still showing up. ❤️

Sometimes the breastfeeding journey doesn't begin the way you imagined it would.
You imagined putting your baby to the breast, figuring things out together and eventually heading home.

Suddenly, breastfeeding may mean expressing milk instead. It may mean learning how to maintain your supply while you're separated from your baby. It may mean waiting patiently for the day baby is ready to latch.

This September, for NICU Awareness Month, we're making space for those mothers too.

Mama needs extra support.

If you're navigating breastfeeding or expressing milk during your NICU journey, you don't have to figure it all out alone.

Seputember Ayingidewo… and we already know somebody's baby has started doing something that has the entire family Googling. 😂

But this month, we're making room for a very important conversation: NICU babies, their mothers and the support they need along the way. Because when a baby needs extra care, Mama needs support too.

We'll be talking about breastfeeding, expressing milk, milk supply, skin-to-skin, returning home after NICU, and all the little things that can make a big difference to a mother navigating this journey.

And yes… we'll still have our usual breastfeeding conversations, because babies apparently did not agree to give us a September break. 😅🤱🏾

Welcome to September, Mama. Let's learn, laugh, and nourish together. 💚🧡

When knowledge travels, the whole lactation community grows.

On Wednesday, . Doreen and her mentees and had the opportunity to meet IBCLC Katinka Musavaya of from Zimbabwe, who also serves as the IBCLC representative for the Sub-Saharan African region.

The conversation was an opportunity to share experiences, exchange knowledge and have honest conversations about the challenges and opportunities in lactation consultancy, as well as the career possibilities for aspiring IBCLCs.

Katinka is currently in Uganda for the ongoing Uganda Paediatric Association (UPA) Conference at Munyonyo, where she is showcasing the work and importance of IBCLCs and connecting with lactation professionals in Uganda.

For us at Naturally Nourish, moments like these matter because building breastfeeding support is about supporting mothers today and growing a community of skilled professionals who can support more mothers tomorrow. 💚🧡

To every aspiring IBCLC: keep learning, keep asking questions, keep seeking mentorship. Africa needs you.

Sometimes what looks like “my milk is late” is actually a mother trying to understand the normal changes happening in the first days of breastfeeding.

Frequent feeding, small amounts of colostrum, and breasts that don’t feel constantly full can all create doubt, especially when everyone around you has an opinion.

Get support when you need it so that you can ask the right questions and get the answers that come with ku ground solutions. 🤱🏾

Your body and your baby are learning together. And you don't have to navigate that learning curve alone.

My milk should come immediately.
Meanwhile, your body: “Please hold. We are still setting things up.” 😅🤱🏾

One of the biggest breastfeeding expectations is that milk should suddenly arrive in abundance the moment baby is born.

But breastfeeding is a learning process for both you and your baby. Your body is adapting, your baby is learning to feed, and your milk production is responding to that stimulation.

So if you're in those early days wondering, “Is my milk enough?”
Breathe... Your body is learning too. 💚🧡

And if you're unsure about what is normal, you don't have to figure it out alone. The right support can help you understand what's happening and know when you need extra help.
