Rare disease Advocacy and Awareness: Action Against Cancer (AACA) is a non-profit organization actively working to improve the lives of individuals affected by rare diseases in Uganda. Through comprehensive support, targeted advocacy, and educational programs, AACA is driving change, notably by participating in the Uganda Rare Disease Awareness Run on February 28, 2026, which coincides with Rare Disease Day.

To further scientific advancements, AACA is involved in the 1st National Scientific Conference for Rare Diseases, scheduled for April 2026 in Kampala. This landmark event aims to accelerate rare disease research, strengthen genomics knowledge, and foster collaborative clinical science in Uganda, directly addressing the need for better diagnosis and treatment.

As a nation, the campaign is heavily focused on integrating Genetics and Counseling into standard clinical services to better manage inherited conditions. Furthermore, efforts are underway to establish Rare Disease Diagnostic Networks for diagnosing rare metabolic diseases, such as lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs). This initiative includes training clinicians and utilizing dried blood spot (DBS) tests to improve accessibility to diagnostics in Uganda Action Against Cancer-AACAThyCa, Inc.Thyroid Patient AdvocacyThyroid Cancer Survivors - Still StandingInstitute of Integrative BioOncologyInstitute for NanoBioTechnology at Johns HopkinsPeaches Womb Cancer Trust

Thyroid cancer in Uganda, while having a relatively low incidence
often Patients are diagnosed with advanced disease, with 85% of cases presenting with goiter at an advanced stage (45% Stage IV) due to limited screening and late diagnosis. It disproportionately affects women (69% of cases), with follicular carcinoma being the most common subtype.Treatment is constrained by resources, with only about 28% of cases receiving radioactive iodine. While 79% undergo some form of thyroidectomy, as access to specialized care is limited.

Action Against Cancer (AACA) has stepped up awareness and prevention linking patients to Free surgical camps for thyroid diseases at Lacor Hospital which provides crucial care, although demand often outstrips supply.

Despite the generally lower incidence, the high percentage of advanced-stage, symptomatic cases indicates a need for better screening and increased access to surgical care including scaling up awareness services Action Against Cancer-AACAbiology researchSymbol of Hope WarriorsWuxi Biomedical Technology Co., LtdInstitute of Integrative BioOncologyInstitute for NanoBioTechnology at Johns Hopkins UniversityJoy's Hope Cancer JourneyThe Marie Keating FoundationCancer Biology Research - Medical Biology & CancerBio-Cancer Cancer Research Institute
