His death, from gastric cancer, shines a light on the urgency of citizen action against cancer in Uganda. He joins an uncomfortably long list of medical fraternity members in Uganda passing away from cancer, including Dr. Margaret Mungherera, Dr. Francis Miiro, Dr. Aldria Ezzati, Mr. Luswa, and a host of others whom we shall not name. Similar to the colleagues named above, Prof. Mbonye was one of the doctors approached by the Uganda Cancer Research Foundation to help establish links between citizen action against cancer with Government action to treat cancer. Citizens can enhance Government action by boosting cancer awareness, developing support mechanism for new patients, and using crown sourcing mechanisms to catalogue places where new patients can obtain care, and help each family tailor their means to the clinical solution they seek. I hope this loss inspires us to take citizen action against cancer to reduce the suffering and pain from cancer.

UCRF Is saddened to learn about the passing of Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga [In Center of the story image below]. In addition to his duties as a shepherd of souls in Uganda, His Grace was a caring human with great compassion who had a heart for patients afflicted with cancer. It was in this regard that he was approached and became one of the early promoters of UCRF, serving as a Board Member and then as a Trustee. We mourn his passing and pray for God's blessing to this great man. may his soul Rest in Eternal Peace.

We wish our volunteers and general public safety and peace as you deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic brings further uncertainty and pain to those touched by cancer. We are delighted to share this inspiring video we found of a grandma -92 years old- who has found peace and perseverance in a simple activity available to us all: walking. Walking unleashes many benefits... achieving daily tasks. But not only that... it is associated with decreasing risk of cancer, risk of cardiovascular disease, improving longevity and general wellbeing. We commend this example to all our volunteers as you deal with the COVID-19 Pandemic:

As a way of strengthening collaboration between UCRF and Kawempe Home Care, Dr. Yusufu and Anthony paid a visit to Kawempe and held a collaboration meeting with Gerevas the Director Kawempe Home Care. In our meeting, we discussed plans for the two organizations to collaborate in undertaking a study to determine the factors affecting children who go through the hostel, why they don't return for chemotherapy after discharge from the hospital. We shall also tackle children's survival rates after discharge. Thanks to Gerevas for hosting us.

We also learnt that since its establishment in 2007, Kawempe home care has supported 414 cancer children and only 99 have been reported dead. The major challenges highlighted: Transport for patients especially after discharge to return for regular checkups and chemo, money for treatment especially given that chemotherapy is very expensive, ignorance of the rural people who normally attribute cancer to witchcraft hence, seeing no reason to come for treatment, stockouts of chemotherapy among others.

The hostel currently hosts 30 children sick of cancer and their caretakers. In total, on a daily basis, they feed 60 people. Everyday, they transport at least 15 children to Mulago for chemo. I welcome back Dr. Yusufu and encourage other members to visit Kawempe and experience the wonderful work going on.

UCRF Volunteers held an informational meeting with Rose at Namela to learn about her fight against cancer. They agreed to meet again next week to shoot a brief movie about Rose's experience with cancer. This will be an inspiration to all volunteers and cancer survivors.

Report from the Gala Review Meeting held on Aug 4th, 2018: Members noted that the event was successful. There was enthusiasm for other mass events. The following activities will be planed and implemented.
1. A cancer walk to promote awareness in Entebbe in October
2. To conduct an informational research about the dilemma of cervical cancer among rural women and traditional healers
3. To raise funds to support UCRF programs
4. To initiate cancer radio programs
5. Tp work with the area MP for Luweero to sensitive the Luweero population.

Mr. Anthony Isanga, UCRF's Luweero Program Manager collaborated with Youth Alive Uganda (YAU) to promote HPV vaccination to fight cervical cancer in Uganda. The program targets young girls and teenage mothers to boost their fight against HIV/AIDS, STDs. Adding a cancer focus helps add value to these programs and leverages the UCRF focus - to work with existing organizations to increase awareness about cancer. Bravo Mr. Isanga and your team!

UCRF with 19 other organizations fighting cancer in Uganda recognized by the American Cancer Society at a ceremony held at Macchinton Hotel. Dr. Orem of the Uganda Cancer Institute was the Chief Guest.
