CHICKEN EMBRYO EXTRACT IN HORSES: WHY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IT
For over eight months, we have been contacted almost daily by horse owners, breeders, trainers, performance barns, and pet owners, all asking about the same line of products by one of our competitors.
Some simply had questions.
Others reached out after reporting negative experiences and hearing about extreme medical cases, and started asking harder questions about what they had been feeding, where those ingredients came from, and what those ingredients were actually supposed to be doing.
A recurring theme kept showing up:
ADVERSE AFFECTS FROM THE PRODUCTS
PEPTIDES.
GROWTH FACTORS.
CELLULAR SIGNALING.
PERFORMANCE.
RECOVERY.
THE PRODUCT JUST STOPPED WORKING
And one particular peptide source continued to come up:
CHICKEN EMBRYO EXTRACT.
We do not build EVOKE by bashing somebody else's product.
We aren't interested in brand wars.
But when owners, breeders, and performance barns continue asking the same questions, we believe those questions deserve an answer.
So we're going to talk about the ingredient, the biology, and the science behind the claims.
And we're starting here:
CHICKEN EMBRYO EXTRACT HAS NOT EARNED THE RIGHT TO BE TREATED LIKE AN ESTABLISHED EQUINE NUTRITIONAL INGREDIENT.
That does not mean we're saying it has been proven harmful.
It means the claims surrounding it deserve a much higher level of evidence.
HORSES ARE BUILT FOR FORAGE.
Horses are herbivorous hindgut fermenters.
Their teeth are built to grind fibrous plants.
Their jaw mechanics support hours of forage chewing.
Their gastrointestinal system is built around frequent intake.
Their cecum and colon house the microbial population responsible for fermenting plant fiber.
Their nutritional biology is fundamentally centered around:
GRASS.
HAY.
FIBER.
FORAGE.
That doesn't mean a horse is physically incapable of consuming something animal-derived.
That's not the argument.
CAN CONSUME ≠ NATURAL FIT.
If horses were biologically dependent on routinely consuming embryonic animal tissue to obtain developmental peptides and growth-factor signals, their natural feeding biology would look very different.
And that matters because chicken embryo extract isn't generally being discussed simply as another source of dietary protein.
It is being marketed because of its supposed biological activity.
Peptides.
Growth factors.
Cellular communication.
Regenerative signaling.
And once those claims enter the conversation, so should the questions.
HERE'S THE DIGESTION PROBLEM.
If these embryonic peptides and growth factors are broken down during digestion like ordinary protein...
Why are we marketing their specific biological signaling activity?
But if they survive digestion, remain biologically active, enter circulation, and affect the horse as claimed...
Where is the equine pharmacology and safety data?
Where is the absorption data?
Where is the dose-response research?
Where is the established effective dose?
Where is the established safe upper dose?
Where is the long-term target-animal research?
And for breeders:
Where is the reproductive and developmental safety data?
Broodmares.
Pregnant mares.
Breeding stallions.
Foals.
Young developing horses.
These are not unreasonable questions.
They're exactly the questions we should be asking when a product is marketed around biologically active signaling compounds.
GROWTH FACTORS ARE SIGNALS.
They aren't simply another vitamin you add more of because more sounds better.
Biological signaling depends on:
DOSE + TIMING + TISSUE + RECEPTOR + ENVIRONMENT + PHYSIOLOGICAL STATE
Finding a growth factor in an ingredient does not automatically prove that feeding that ingredient produces the desired effect in a mature horse.
MORE SIGNALS DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN BETTER BIOLOGY.
And performance horses deserve the same scrutiny.
If a product is marketed as providing biologically active peptides that survive digestion and influence physiology, then performance barns should be asking:
What exactly is producing the claimed effect?
How much reaches circulation?
What is the mechanism?
What is the effective dose?
What happens with prolonged use?
And what are the considerations for tested athletes?
“Natural” should never be confused with “nothing else needs to be investigated.”
HERE IS OUR POSITION.
We are not saying chicken embryo extract has been proven harmful.
We are saying the evidence bar should match the claims.
Before chicken embryo extract is treated like an established equine nutritional ingredient, we want to see:
IDENTITY — What exactly is in it?
STANDARDIZATION — Is every batch consistent?
BIOAVAILABILITY — What survives digestion and reaches the horse?
MECHANISM — What biological pathways are actually affected?
DOSE RESPONSE — How much produces the claimed effect?
TARGET-ANIMAL SAFETY — What happens in horses?
LONG-TERM SAFETY — What happens after months or years?
REPRODUCTIVE SAFETY — What happens in breeding animals and developing offspring?
That isn't anti-science.
THAT IS SCIENCE.
And after eight months of questions from the people actually feeding these products, we think it's time to have the conversation openly.
BIOLOGICALLY INTERESTING DOES NOT MEAN EQUINE-PROVEN.
Natural source does not automatically mean natural fit.
And extraordinary biological claims should require extraordinary equine evidence.
