✨ SAVE THE DATE: The M Factor 2: Before the Pause ✨

Grab your girlfriends, bring your spouse, and join Athena Wellness & Physical Therapy + Vida Women’s Health for an evening dedicated to a conversation every woman deserves to be having.

🎬 The M Factor 2: Before the Pause
📅 Sunday, October 4
⏰ 6:00–8:30 PM
📍 Patagonia | Old Town Alexandria

The M Factor 2: Before the Pause explores perimenopause—the symptoms women experience, potential solutions, and the real stories of women navigating this often confusing stage of life.

And the conversation won’t end when the film does.

Following the screening, we’ll host a panel discussion with local women’s health medical professionals who will dive deeper into the topics raised in the film and answer YOUR questions.

👀 Stay tuned over the next week as we introduce our panelists!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re also using this evening as an opportunity to give back to women in our own community. 💗

Half of all ticket proceeds will benefit The Breast Cancer Collective, a local nonprofit helping women in the DMV who are uninsured access breast cancer screening.

So bring your questions. Bring your girlfriends. Bring your spouse. Come learn more about what may be happening in your body—and what you can actually do about it.

🎟️ Tickets are available now on Eventbrite.

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind—in the best way. 💛

I was incredibly honored to be recognized as one of Alexandria’s 40 Under 40 for 2026. It means so much to have the work we’re doing at Athena acknowledged alongside so many inspiring people who are making a difference in our community. It was a privilege to meet such a talented group of leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers.

To top off an already memorable week, we gathered last night with several other women’s health providers from across our area—physical therapists, chiropractors, mental health therapists, acupuncturists, and others who all share the same goal: helping women receive the care they deserve.

One of the things I’ve learned since starting Athena is that real change doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when passionate people come together, share ideas, support one another, and build a community focused on something bigger than themselves.

There is still so much work to do when it comes to improving healthcare for women. But nights like last night leave me feeling incredibly hopeful. The DC area is filled with providers who genuinely care, collaborate instead of compete, and are committed to raising the standard of care for women.

I’m feeling incredibly grateful—for these opportunities, for this growing community, and for everyone who has supported Athena along the way.

Here’s to continuing to build something bigger than ourselves. 💛.

We are so excited to officially introduce Kate to our community! ...

“I’m a physical therapist specializing in pelvic health, pregnancy and postpartum care, menopause, and supporting women through and beyond cancer treatment.

After 22 years in the military as a medevac pilot, I trained and performed to the same high professional and physical standards as my male peers. Over time, I came to recognize the strength in my femininity and the important role it played in my leadership, service, and relationships. Embracing those strengths led me to pursue healthcare and motherhood simultaneously as I prepared for military retirement—a season that profoundly shaped my path.

During that time, I sought postpartum physical therapy care myself, only to discover the providers I saw lacked the specialized training I needed. I spent months investing precious time into care that fell short. That experience fuels my commitment to ensuring women receive the high-quality, specialized care they deserve.

My passion has since expanded to include perimenopause, menopause, and oncology rehabilitation, inspired in part by my sister’s breast cancer diagnosis at age 40.

My goal is to support women through every stage of life and the many hormonal, health, and life transitions we experience. I am incredibly honored to be part of Athena Wellness & Physical Therapy and its mission to provide exceptional care to women in the Fort Hunt community and beyond.”

Meet Patricia! 💛

Patricia has been with Athena behind the scenes since January helping us grow our programming and community outreach, and we are so excited to officially introduce her in this new role.

Beginning in June, Patricia will be stepping into personal training services at Athena with programs thoughtfully designed for women navigating major life transitions. Think: movement and strength support for brain fog, fatigue, balance, bone health, fall risk, recovery, and so much more.

As a breast cancer survivor and mom of two young children herself, Patricia has intentionally created these programs to truly meet women where they are — especially during seasons that can feel overwhelming, isolating, or physically demanding.

✨ Here’s a little more about why this work is so meaningful to her:

“My background is in science, research and design, and program management. After completing my PhD, I spent much of my career helping develop health-related tools, systems, and programs focused on protecting and supporting military populations. Over time, I realized I wanted to apply those same skills and experiences more directly to helping people navigate recovery, healing, and long-term wellness.

My own experiences during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and cancer survivorship deeply shaped the way I view healthcare and recovery. I saw firsthand how many people are left trying to rebuild strength, confidence, energy, and function after treatment or major life changes without enough guidance or support.

That experience sparked a passion for bridging the gap between healthcare, movement, recovery, and everyday life.

I now feel called to focus my efforts on women, mothers, and cancer survivors navigating some of the most vulnerable and transformative seasons of their lives.

My goal is to create a supportive environment where clients feel safe starting wherever they are — even on the hard days.” ✨

As our community continues to grow, we wanted to take a moment to reintroduce one of the amazing pelvic health physical therapists on our team at Athena Wellness & Physical Therapy 💛

When I asked Stephanie why she does what she does, this was her answer:

“Becoming a parent first sparked my interest in pelvic floor physical therapy. After experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction during my second pregnancy and not receiving specialized care, I knew I wanted to learn more and help others navigate similar challenges.

As I pursued training in pelvic health, I found traditional outpatient settings limiting—I wasn’t able to provide the level of individualized, patient-centered care I value.

That’s what led me to Athena Wellness, where I work alongside like-minded clinicians who are passionate about elevating women’s health physical therapy. Here, I have the time to truly get to know you—your story, your goals, and what matters most to you.

Pelvic floor symptoms can feel confusing and overwhelming, but your care doesn’t have to be. I enjoy treating a variety of patients including pregnant and postpartum people, those experiencing pelvic pain, incontinence, as well as hip and low back pain.

My goal is to help you feel like yourself again—moving confidently, restoring function, and returning to what you love, pain-free.” ✨

We are so grateful to have providers on our team who are deeply passionate about changing the standard of care for women.

💛 Come meet Stephanie this Sunday, May 17th on the expert panel following the screening of Lady Parts at Patagonia in Old Town from 6-8:30 pm!

Did you know postpartum support in physical therapy is not always just about the pelvic floor and core?

Physical therapists trained in lymphatic massage can also help with breastfeeding challenges such as engorgement.

When your milk is coming in—or when the breasts become overly full—they can feel:
• Swollen
• Firm
• Tender
• Painful

This swelling can make latching more difficult and feeding more uncomfortable for both mom and baby.

Using light, skin-stretching pressure (not deep tissue pressure), we can encourage fluid movement away from congested areas, decrease swelling, and improve comfort. Often, this can also help soften the tissue enough to make latch and milk flow easier.

A few reminders:
• Gentle pressure works best—more pressure is not better
• Focus on moving fluid toward the armpit and collarbone areas
• Use before feeds or pumping if swelling is limiting latch
• Pair with frequent feeding, position changes, and guidance from your provider

You do not have to “push through” painful engorgement.

At Athena Wellness & Physical Therapy, we support women through pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding challenges, and recovery with whole-person care.

💛 If you’re struggling with engorgement, discomfort, or breast swelling, reach out. Support is available.

✨ We have a lot of new faces here, so I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce who we are. ✨

Athena Wellness & Physical Therapy was born out of years of burnout and frustration I experienced while treating breast cancer patients in a fast-paced outpatient orthopedic clinic. A cancer diagnosis is traumatic enough—but rushed appointments in a crowded gym, while patients were navigating multiple physical impairments and processing a life-changing diagnosis, never felt like quality care.

My original plan was to open a clinic within a local breast surgeon’s office. After two years of meetings and negotiations, what I once thought was my dream opportunity fell through while I was on maternity leave with my second child.

Without a formal backup plan, I knew one thing: I could not continue feeling depleted at work while raising two young children at home.

So, I took a leap of faith and opened my own clinic—originally focused on oncology care.

But as I started down that path, I realized I wanted to do more.

My own experiences with pregnancy and childbirth left me wanting better care for women. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I asked for a pelvic floor physical therapy referral (back when one was still required in Virginia) and was told it was typically only given if someone was in significant pain or had experienced a traumatic birth.

That conversation stayed with me.

Pelvic floor physical therapy should not be reserved for when women are at their worst. It can be transformative for prevention, labor preparation, postpartum recovery, and long-term function.

The more I reflected, the more I knew: if I was going to build something, it needed to be comprehensive.

At Athena, our mission is to support women across the lifespan—through oncology, pregnancy and postpartum, pelvic health, and beyond—with specialists who truly understand each stage.

Today, my goal is simple: to give women a place where they feel heard, supported, and empowered. A place where they can set goals they may not have thought possible—and move through life feeling strong, confident, and cared for. 💛

This week is Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Awareness Week 💛

Cancer in teens and young adults often looks different—and so do their needs. These patients are navigating school, careers, relationships, fertility concerns, and identity, all while facing a life-changing diagnosis.

As a physical therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to support not just survival, but quality of life. From managing fatigue and restoring strength, to addressing pelvic health, lymphedema, and long-term side effects of treatment—these patients deserve care that meets them where they are.

Early support matters. Education matters. Being heard matters.

Let’s continue to advocate for better resources, more awareness, and whole-person care for this unique and resilient population. We have to do better. 💛
