This little lady came in very anxious today for her piercing 💜 So I took extra time, gave her some distraction tools, and talked her through every step. I also had another piercer with me for a bit today, so we were able to do them tandem. That isn’t usually an option, but for her anxiety it worked out perfectly.
Before we started, I made sure she was ready and reminded her that if she changed her mind, that was completely okay and I would respect it. She said yes when she was ready…. and SHE did SO good 🥹
👉🏻 In Kentucky, kids MUST be at least 6, have a notarized consent form, and have a parent present with their ID to be pierced in a tattoo shop.
I make sure the child knows their consent matters most. I ask if this is what THEY want. I remind them that they can say no or change their mind at any point. And if they do, my hands are immediately off and my tools go down. I will never pressure or guilt them into a decision they aren’t comfortable with.
I hope I can be one more person teaching them that their boundaries matter. Giving kids autonomy over their body, even with a piercing, helps teach them that they are allowed to say no, and that “no” should be respected.
Of course, these piercings are important. I love seeing their faces light up when they look at their new jewelry and how proud they are of themselves for doing it!! And when they leave, I want them to know their voice matters and their body deserves to be respected. They will always be safe and listened to every second they are with me 💜
