This quote is a powerful reminder for parents, teachers, and providers.

When a child is struggling, we often ask:

โ€œWhy wonโ€™t they listen?โ€
โ€œWhy are they overreacting?โ€
โ€œWhy canโ€™t they just calm down?โ€

But a functional medicine lens invites us to ask:

Is their nervous system overwhelmed?
Is their body inflamed?
Is their blood sugar crashing?
Are they sleeping enough?
Are they reacting to foods?
Are they low in key nutrients?
Is their gut sending distress signals to the brain?
Children do well when they can.

When they cannot, we look deeper.

What is one way your child communicates overwhelm without using words?

A protein-rich, gluten-free, dairy-free option that many picky eaters enjoy.

Why I like it:
Protein supports blood sugar stability, while sweet potato provides fiber and complex carbohydrates.

Would your child dip these in ketchup, guacamole, honey mustard, or ranch? Share your inspiration in the comments๐Ÿฉท

The Biological Load Bucket

Every stressor adds a little more to that bucket:
Poor sleep
Constipation
Gut dysbiosis
Nutrient depletion
Blood sugar swings
Food sensitivities
Inflammatory burden
Mold or environmental exposures
Chronic infections
Sensory stress
Emotional stress
Mitochondrial strain

Eventually, the bucket overflows.

That overflow may look like:
Meltdowns
Aggression
Anxiety
Hyperactivity
Defiance
Shutdowns
Sleep disruption
Sensory intolerance
Emotional instability
Picky eating
Regression in skills

The goal is not to blame the child or the parent.
The goal is to ask:

Functional medicine helps us identify patterns that may be missed when we only look at symptoms separately.

It's not "Just Behavior."

When an individual is struggling with autism, ADHD, anxiety, or emotional instability, we want to look deeper than the diagnosis alone. We want to ask:

Is the gut inflamed?
Is the microbiome imbalanced?
Are nutrients depleted?
Is the immune system on high alert?
Is sleep restorative?
Are mitochondria struggling to make enough energy?
Are โ€œnormalโ€ labs actually optimal?

A diagnosis gives us a name.
A functional medicine lens helps us map the biological load underneath that is making everything harder.

This month, Iโ€™ll be sharing how gut health, inflammation, nutrient status, mitochondrial stress, and the gut-brain axis may influence symptoms like meltdowns, sensory sensitivity, food reactions, sleep disruption, and emotional dysregulation.

Your child is not broken. Their body may simply be overwhelmed.

This quote from Temple Grandin is one every family deserves to hear.

A childโ€™s diagnosis does not define their worth, potential, intelligence, creativity, or future.

In functional medicine, we do not try to change who a child is.

We support the body so the child can function with more comfort, resilience, and regulation.

The goal is not to erase neurodiversity.

The goal is to reduce the biological stressors that may make life harder:

Poor sleep
Gut pain
Nutrient depletion
Inflammation
Food reactions
Mitochondrial stress
Sensory overload
Blood sugar crashes

Different is not less.

And supported is not the same as โ€œfixed.โ€

This is a simple, kid-friendly snack that supports blood sugar balance and provides fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidant-rich berries.

Why I like it:
Chia seeds provide fiber and omega-3 fats, while blueberries provide polyphenols that help nourish the gut microbiome.

Would your child try this if you called it โ€œpurple power puddingโ€? Give a ๐Ÿ‘if you think so

Yes, popsicles. High protein, high comfort, and surprisingly kid-friendly.

๐—œ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€
2 cups bone broth, chicken or beef
1 cup unsweetened apple juice or coconut water
1โ€“2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup

Optional Add-Ins
A tiny pinch of sea salt
A squeeze of lemon
1โ€“2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt for a creamier version

๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€
Warm the broth slightly.
Heat the bone broth just enough so it is fully liquid and easy to mix. Do not boil.

Mix.
In a bowl or measuring cup, stir together the bone broth, apple juice or coconut water, and honey or maple syrup until smooth.

Taste and adjust.
If your broth is very savory, add a little more apple juice or honey to make it more kid-friendly.

Pour into molds.
Divide the mixture into popsicle molds.

Freeze.
Freeze for at least 4โ€“6 hours, or until completely solid.

Serve.
Run the mold under warm water for a few seconds to release the popsicles.

Parent Tip
Start with chicken bone broth and apple juice for the mildest flavor. It tastes lightly sweet and comforting, with the broth flavor mellowed out.

Why Parents Love It
High protein
Easy to prep
Soothing and comforting
Great for picky eaters
Fun way to serve bone broth
