This mama had thoughtfully planned and prepared for a homebirth. She reached out, believing her water had broken and it was clear that her carefully made plans would need to change for the safety of her baby.

She embraced the change in plans, we initiated a transfer of care, and I met her at the hospital. Her beautiful baby boy was born safely by cesarean.

Birth doesn’t always go according to plan, but being able to recognize when the plan needs to change is part of good care. And sometimes, the strength of a mother is found in her willingness to adapt.

Today I had the privilege of catching a baby while covering for another midwife. As I made my way home this morning, this beautiful view was a gentle reminder of what an incredible calling this work truly is.

It is such a blessing to be trusted and welcomed into one of the most intimate and life-changing moments in a family's journey. Witnessing the strength, love, and joy that surrounds the arrival of a new baby is something I never take for granted.

This family welcomed their second home birth baby, and it was such a joy to be part of this special morning.

Mom labored beautifully through the early morning hours with the support of her husband and sisters. When I arrived, she entered the birth pool and continued laboring peacefully until her little one made his way earthside.

This little guy’s birth was a little intricate —his cord was wrapped snugly around his waist and threaded between his legs. With a gentle adjustment to create some slack, he was able to be born and I was able to help unwind him before his daddy brought him to the surface for their first hello.

Big brother woke up to the sweetest surprise—a brand new baby brother.

There was a little extra excitement in the neighborhood this morning as sweet baby brother made his entrance into the world.

Over the past few weeks, the family’s neighbors had been eagerly—and a little curiously—following along with their home birth journey. They often stopped the family during their walks to ask if baby had arrived yet. The family told them that when the time came, they would know by the pinwheels in the yard.

Not long after birth, proud big brother helped his aunts place the pinwheels out front, quietly announcing that baby had arrived. I can only imagine the smiles it brought to those neighbors who had been patiently waiting for the special news.
