Friendship…this might hit you hard but we need to start talking about it.

1. You keep waiting for someone to give you permission.

You already know there’s something you want to try, change, leave, or pursue. But you keep looking for validation from people who aren’t living the life you want. At some point, you have to choose yourself.

2. You say you want a different life, but you keep choosing what’s comfortable.

Growth sounds exciting until it requires you to be a beginner again, risk rejection, spend money on yourself, or possibly fail. You’re not always stuck because you lack opportunities. Sometimes you’re stuck because familiar feels safer than unknown.

3. You’re spending too much time watching other people live instead of building your own life.

Scrolling. Comparing. Watching someone else travel, build a business, change careers, get healthier, or chase their dream. Their progress isn’t what’s holding you back, but constantly consuming instead of creating might be.

At 37, I’ve realized thriving isn’t about having your entire life figured out. It’s about finally taking responsibility for where your life goes next.

Skipping your lunch doesn’t make you a better nurse.

I hear nurses say it all the time: “I was too busy to eat.” “I didn’t have time for a break.” “There was just too much to do.”

And yes, nursing gets busy. There will always be another medication to give, another call light going off, another chart to finish, or another task waiting for you.

But here’s something I’ve learned throughout my nursing career: not everything needs to be done right this second.

Taking your break requires communication, organization, and sometimes advocating for yourself.

Tell your charge nurse and your team, “I’d like to take my lunch around this time.” Look at your assignments and organize your tasks around it. Give yourself permission to hand things off appropriately and recognize what can safely wait until you return.

We make sure our patients eat. We set up their trays. We remind them to drink water. We encourage them to rest.

Meanwhile, some nurses are running around for 12 hours without giving themselves those same basic needs.

You cannot constantly put yourself at the bottom of your own priority list and expect yourself to keep pouring into everyone else.

Taking my breaks has actually made me more mindful of my time. I come back fed, re-energized, and better able to focus on what needs to get done.

Your break is not something you need to feel guilty about taking.

Advocating for yourself is part of learning how to thrive in nursing.

So nurse friend, take your lunch. Your charting will still be there when you get back.

And if taking a 30-minute break feels impossible every single shift, it might be time to look at what needs to change not just accept burnout as part of being a nurse.
