Some kids aren't talkers. Ask "how was your day?" and you'll get "fine," and that's the end of it.
But once their hands and minds are moving in a different way, they start to open up. It comes out through the fabric they choose, the colors, the little details that mean something to them and they get to share it when they feel comfortable, not when they're put on the spot.
That's what Art Lab is. This summer our teens built wooden dolls representing themselves and along the way we slowed down, checked in with our bodies, and practiced breathing in a space where nothing has to be "right."
There's research behind it too: a Drexel University study found that 45 minutes of art-making lowered stress hormones in most participants, whether or not they had any art experience.
Sometimes art gives teens a way to express what words can't.
Art Lab meets every Thursday from 5β6pm for tweens and teens who feel overwhelmed and do better by doing than by talking. No art skills needed.
