Did you know your brain keeps developing into your 30s? Alcohol exposure during this time can negatively impact development. The good news: your brain is neuroplastic and can heal. Stopping alcohol consumption allows damaged parts to potentially regrow.

The human brain continues to grow from adolescence into the 30s. Any alcohol exposure, even in small amounts, during these formative years of brain development can negatively affect the brain. The human brain is also neuroplastic, and it can heal itself like any other part of the body.If someone is drinking alcohol daily and they stop drinking and go into abstinence, then some of the brain damage related to the alcohol can reverse. During abstinence, the brain can regrow the parts that were lost or damaged due to alcohol consumption.

Before modern medicine, germ phobias protected ancestors from deadly infections. Now, in our sanitized world, those same intense caution and vigilance against germs can become maladaptive. It's a fascinating look at how ancient survival traits persist.
Sometimes patients ask me why I feel compelled to wash my hands, why I'm so afraid of germs. We have to understand that, before the modern era, most people lived in unclean, unhygienic environments, and infections were deadly. Most of the deadly pathogens- bacteria, viruses, and parasites- that can cause tuberculosis, plague, cholera, and dysentery are caused by contact with pathogens that are not visible to the naked eye. Before the era of antibiotics and modern medicine, any kind of infection could be lethal, and people could die.
So, during that time, the OCD trait of being extra cautious and extra vigilant against germs, avoiding contact with strangers or avoiding touching things touched by other strangers, might have prevented their bodies from coming into contact with deadly pathogens. OCD patients may still be carrying those genes and traits. Still, in today's world, where most places in developed countries are highly sanitized and germs no longer pose an existential threat, these thoughts and behaviors have become maladaptive.

Are you washing your hands too much or for too long? This method helps you reduce unnecessary handwashing by limiting time and soap, but it doesn't replace essential hygiene after using the restroom or touching dirt.
Handwashing related to OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, is the unnecessary extra washing you do to remove imaginary dirt and germs you cannot see. Try to limit how long you spend washing your hands. When you wash your hands, try to limit it to one minute at first, then gradually reduce it to 30 seconds, then 20 seconds.
Try not to use any soap. Use minimal water. As you reduce the washing time, the goal is to minimize this unnecessary washing to the point where you don't need to wash at all. But again, do not mistake this unnecessary hand washing for the beneficial, required hand washing we do after we use the restroom or when we touch something visibly dirty.
So, in summary, you are trying to fight it on both ends: you are delaying when you wash your hands, and you are also minimizing the time you spend washing them.

Constantly worried about germs? Do you avoid touching surfaces or washing your hands obsessively? This video offers a practical approach to manage that urge. Start by delaying handwashing by just 5 minutes, then gradually increase the time. Learn to distract yourself and build coping skills. You can regain control and reduce anxiety.

Do you actively avoid touching door handles or pressing elevator buttons, or do you feel uncomfortable sitting on a public bench for fear of germs and contamination? If you have to wash your hands immediately after touching a handle, try to wait 5 minutes. Try to distract yourself with some activity- talking, working, drawing, anything positive to keep your mind away from the urge to wash your hands. Initially, you may be able to delay it by 5 minutes. Keep working on it until you can delay it by 10 minutes, 15 minutes, half an hour, or an hour. The goal is to learn coping skills and relaxation techniques so you can delay the urge long enough to forget about it. Patients with severe OCD may need psychotherapy and medications.

Even gifted students may not see academic drops while drinking, but their brains are working harder for the same results. Giving up alcohol can unlock higher scores and more effective learning. It disrupts white matter, impairing new learning and memory.

Unconscious Mind-3
Repressed emotions can surface as physical or mental distress. Carl Jung called this the 'shadow.' Integrating your masked persona with these hidden negative qualities is key to self-actualization and unlocking immense creative energy.

Depending on a person's genetic makeup, repressed emotions can show up as physical symptoms like stomach problems, occasional pseudo-seizures, or pain throughout the body. They can also appear as mental symptoms, such as unexplained anxiety, panic attacks, fear, bitterness, negativity, pessimism, resentment, or trouble sleeping.
According to Carl Jung, all these repressed emotions and thoughts make up what he calls our shadow. When we present a certain image, or persona, to the world, we try to hide this shadow. However, the shadow does not disappear. It stays in the background and can show up when we least expect it.
The journey toward self-actualization begins when we integrate both our mask and our shadow. By acknowledging the negative qualities we have tried to hide, we allow them to come to the surface and accept ourselves, flaws and all. If we can channel these repressed emotions in a positive direction, we can tap into the creative energy they hold and achieve great things.

As kids, our impulses and desires are raw. We learn to curb anger, selfishness, and rage, often through punishment. We wear masks to please parents, teachers, and bosses, seeking love and approval. But over time, this constant performance can lead us to lose touch with our true inner selves.
