This month, we are excited to host Cami Frickman and Alicia Field to share about their diverse grief support experiences while working with children of adult patients and teen patients. Cami and Alicia each bring nearly 30 years of experience as Certified Child Life Specialists, dedicating their careers to supporting children and families through complex medical experiences. Cami received her BFA with a Certificate in Art Therapy from the School of Visual Arts, where she completed internships at Mount Sinai and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She is also a Certified Grief Support Specialist, holds a certificate in Thanatology from Hood College, and is certified as a Clinical Trauma and Resilience Specialist through the STARR Network. Alicia holds a Bachelor of Science in Family and Child Development from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and began her career at Children’s National Hospital before transitioning to Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.

In their current roles, both specialize in supporting children of adult patients and adolescents hospitalized on adult units, providing developmentally appropriate education and emotional support to help families navigate challenging healthcare journeys. They are deeply passionate about supporting children and families throughout the bereavement process.

This webinar will cover the following objectives:
1. Summarize the attributes of compassionate care in working with patients and family members at the end-of-life.
2. Identify methods of self-care in working with death and dying.
3. Identify 2-3 creative activities which can be utilized in working with families at the end-of-life.

This webinar will be recorded. In order to receive a PDU certificate from watching the recording, you must be registered and a post-quiz and post-survey must be completed.

As parents, our instinct is often to make the fear go away. We reassure. We encourage. We tell our children they’ll be okay.

Child Life Specialists focus on preparing children for what to expect, validating their feelings, and teaching coping skills that help them move through difficult experiences. When children understand what’s happening and feel supported, they often feel more confident and in control.

💙 Parents aren’t doing it wrong. They’re doing what comes naturally.Sometimes we just add a few extra tools to help children cope through the hard moments.

School gave your child dozens of invisible regulation supports: predictable timing, movement breaks, peer interaction, clear expectations, and structured transitions.

When summer begins, all of that disappears overnight.

What looks like attitude, defiance or constant arguing. May actually be nervous system dysregulation from too much unstructured change.

Kids don’t just need freedom. They need rhythm.

Save this if summer already feels harder than expected❤️

As child life specialists, we know that every child approaches new experiences, challenges, and stressors differently. Each child brings their own unique strengths to difficult situations.

Whether a child is preparing for a medical procedure, their first day of school or a new adventure, understanding their personality can help us better support them through these experiences. Child life specialists recognize a child’s temperament and developmental needs, validate their feelings, and help them find coping strategies that work for them.

Travel this summer can be exciting for families, but for many children, flying on an airplane can be a big stressor.

The unfamiliar sounds, busy airports, long waits, turbulence, and being away from their usual routines can feel overwhelming. This summer, try encouraging children to choose items to help them with travel.

Have them choose items to fill their own backpack🎒:
🧸Comfort Items: stuffed animal, neck pillow or a blanket
🧩Games: uno, cards, iSpy, and other travel sized games!
🖍️Activities: sticker scenes, coloring, reading books, crossword puzzles, activity books
📱Electronic: iPad, headphones, Nook,
🎧Sensory: noise canceling headphones, fidget spinner, stress ball
✈️ Take off/Landing helpers: chew tubes, gum, snacks, pacifiers

Allowing children to choose items to comfort them during moments they may feel scared can help reduce their anxiety.

What helps your child feel comfortable while traveling? ✈️🌎
