Every child learns differently, and every child deserves the opportunity to communicate, connect, and succeed.
One of my favorite success stories was with a student who used an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) deviceāa tool that helps individuals communicate when speaking is difficult or limited.
When we first started working together through virtual therapy, they were still learning how to use their device and weren't yet confident communicating with it.
Instead of drilling isolated words, we explored core words and simple phrases through games, conversation, and meaningful activities. As therapy became fun and functional, something amazing happened.
They became engaged.
They began using their device more confidently, participated more during sessions, and quickly expanded the language they could express. By the end of the school year, they had met many of their communication goalsānot simply because they had an AAC device, but because they were given the opportunity to learn it in a way that felt natural, social, and motivating.
Moments like these are a reminder that when we meet students where they are and provide individualized support, incredible growth is possible.
