Here's a little fact you might have heard before: Humans are around 70% water. About the same percentage as a sweet potato, incidentally. But what does that actually mean? Sure, there's blood, that accounts for some of it. And the lymphatic system has a fair amount too, sloshing around. There's water in each of our cells. But that doesn't add up to the full 70% - where is the rest of it?

In 2018, a scientific paper was published which gives a tantalising clue. The authors revealed for the first time that our 'interstitial spaces' - those gaps, between our bones and joints and all of our organs - spaces which are often somewhat sidelined in conventional anatomy - those spaces were full of a kind of soft, gel-like liquid. Flowing around the body. Bringing essential substances to where they're needed. Connecting all the disparate parts of us and communicating between them. They called this massive, fluid-filled system 'The Interstitium', and suggested that it might be a brand new, previously undiscovered organ.

This moist, fibrous network seems to be important, in ways we still don't quite understand. It seems to have a key role in so many of our body's essential functions, from wound repair, to the maintenance of our body-clocks, to the spread of cancer from one tissue to another. And it's everywhere.

Emily Knight takes a journey deep into the human body, into the ocean within us, the spaces in between the things we think of as 'us'. And discovers the way it flows, and the things that flow through it.

It’s been a full and busy week of treating wonderful babies and women! This week included sweet babies with head turning preferences, GI symptoms and head shape concerns, tongue tie, and those needing developmental help along with women with prolapse who are ready to exercise again, women with pelvic pain, and some CranioSacral sessions and lactation visits to round the week out! Breathing for a minute watching the horses. ❤️

This 2024 study describes what’s normal for night-waking in breastfeeding babies 5 to 12 months old. Not surprisingly, 97% woke and nursed at least once during the night. It’s reassuring to know that night nursing at this stage is age-appropriate, not the sign of faulty parenting or a sleep disorder. Breast milk is tailored for your baby and changes throughout the day, with the seasons, as they grow, and to help them fight off illnesses.

Breastfeeding provides:

💟 Signals that it’s time to sleep
💟 Extra hydration when it’s hot
💟 Specific antibodies when mum or baby is sick
💟 Adapted fat content and nutrients as they grow

We need to talk about the “is he a good baby?” question.

Because somewhere along the way, “good” became code for sleeps through the night, settles easily, and doesn’t need much. And by that logic, half the most normal newborn behaviour on earth gets quietly filed under “bad.”

So here’s your official guide to telling the difference. On the left, all the things that get a baby unfairly labelled difficult, the night feeds, the contact naps, the 3am parties for one. On the right, actual bad behaviour. The white-collar crime. The tax evasion. The Ponzi schemes.

Notice your baby isn’t on the right side, mama. Wanting you is not a character flaw. It’s just a baby being a baby.

Tag a mama whose “badly behaved” newborn has, to date, a completely spotless criminal record. 🤍

I love my Fringe red light and use it daily! ❤️This week, July 13-19, you can get 20 percent off site wide with my affiliate code so you can have your own sunshine ☀️ 🎉🎊. Controlled studies and meta analysis have shown promising results in many areas of dermatology, and efficacy for knee osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, with emerging research for major depressive disorder. I think the panel red lights are great for working with circadian rhythm prior to bed as we are learning so much about how circadian rhythm affects the hormonal system.
