I love that we’re drawing attention to the importance of understanding ultra-processed foods. But why wait on an “official” definition when we know they are linked to obesity, chronic disease and poor health outcomes.
As a dietitian I’ve always been really conscious of exposing my family to a balanced healthy diet and I’m passionate about helping people move the needle towards a mostly real food approach.
But here’s the thing: processed and ultra-processed are NOT the same.
Some processed foods can be incredibly helpful tools when you’re trying to eat well and feed a family in real life. The list is LONG and my clients tap into these on the daily, because it’s still real food that nourishes and it’s way more approachable than making everything from scratch.
Ultra-processed foods, on the other hand, have been adulterated with ingredients you’d never use in a real food kitchen and in fact many of these things are not even food at all. Things with additives like artificial colors, flavors, emulsifiers and sugar - that enhance the taste and texture of food, make it last longer on the shelf, and are super cheap to make compared to real food alternatives.
And we know that they are causing a health crisis.
