The Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill in Atlanta, Georgia, is the first city-owned and managed food forest in the United States, transforming a seven-acre pecan farm into a thriving edible landscape.
Here, residents can stroll through lush greenery, breathe in fresh air, and pick fruit and vegetables straight from the land. The forest is home to around 2,500 edible and medicinal plants, offering free food to anyone in need. This innovative project is part of a growing movement across the U.S. to address hunger and food deserts by creating accessible, sustainable sources of nourishment.
In Atlanta, the need is urgent—an estimated 125,000 residents live in food deserts, areas where grocery stores are scarce, according to the USDA’s Food Access Research Atlas. The Urban Food Forest at Browns Mill, now the nation’s largest free-food forest, is a collaborative effort by The Conservation Fund, the city of Atlanta, and the U.S. Forest Service. Together, they’ve ensured this former pecan farm continues its legacy of feeding the community and providing a model for food sustainability.
