🌟 Board Member of the Month: Michael Lievers, PharmD 🌟
This month, we are proud to recognize Michael Lievers, PharmD, President-Elect of the Atlanta Academy of Institutional Pharmacy (AAIP), as our Board Member of the Month!
Michael brings a diverse background in clinical research, acute care, pharmacy operations, leadership, and home infusion pharmacy. A graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, he also completed his PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at XULA/LSUHSC with a focus on institutional practice and education.
Throughout his career, Michael has remained committed to evidence-based practice, operational excellence, and patient-centered care. In his current role with Option Care Health, he continues to support safe and effective medication management in the home infusion setting while building strong relationships with healthcare providers and industry partners.
As AAIP President-Elect, Michael is passionate about advancing institutional pharmacy, creating professional development opportunities, and supporting the next generation of pharmacy leaders.

AAIP recently hosted its first member meeting of the 2026–2027 term at Maggiano’s Little Italy Perimeter. The evening featured two informative presentations focused on cardiovascular health and anemia management.

✨ What an incredible evening celebrating excellence, leadership, and impact at the 2026 AAIP Banquet!

This year’s CE Program featured outstanding resident presentations on venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in bariatric surgery, antibiotic duration optimization using PCR-culture results, and the utilization and standardization of chemical restraints in hospitalized patients. Thank you to Ashley Bennett, PharmD; Kala Eliacin, PharmD; and Samuel Van Horn, PharmD for sharing your knowledge and advancing pharmacy practice.

🌟 AAIP Board Member Spotlight 🌟
We’re excited to highlight Phu Nguyen, a dedicated student leader and PharmD candidate at Mercer University College of Pharmacy.
Originally from Vietnam, Phu moved to the United States in 2014 and earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Georgia State University. He is currently a second-year pharmacy student at Mercer, where he serves as President of ACCP, demonstrating strong leadership and commitment to advancing clinical pharmacy practice and student engagement.
Phu is also gaining valuable hands-on experience as a pharmacy intern at Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and Northside Hospital Forsyth. His professional interests include oncology, cardiology, and neurology.
Outside of pharmacy, Phu enjoys working out, traveling, learning new languages, and spending time watching football with friends.

AIP Board Member Spotlight 🌟
We’re proud to highlight Dr. Kim Barefield, PharmD, BCPS, MHA, a dedicated member of the Atlanta Academy of Institutional Pharmacy (AAIP) Board.
Dr. Barefield earned her BS and PharmD from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and completed her residency at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC. She is board-certified in pharmacotherapy through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and also holds a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from South University.
With experience in both community and hospital practice, she previously developed a PGY-1/PGY-2 Academic Administration & Pharmacy Practice residency program at South University. She now serves as Associate Professor and Director of Interprofessional Education at the PCOM School of Pharmacy, where she also precepts fourth-year PharmD students in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Barefield remains active in scholarship and has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications.

🌟 AAIP Board Member Spotlight 🌟
We’re excited to highlight Jaelyn Benyard, MHA, PharmD Candidate and Student Board Member with the Atlanta Academy of Institutional Pharmacy (AAIP).
Jaelyn is a third-year pharmacy student at the PCOM School of Pharmacy and brings a strong academic and leadership background to the board. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, she completed her undergraduate studies at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and earned her Master of Health Administration degree from Florida Atlantic University. She currently works as a pharmacy intern at CVS.
Outside of pharmacy, Jaelyn enjoys traveling, playing the piano, shopping, working out, and spending quality time with her family. We’re grateful for her dedication to leadership and service within institutional pharmacy and are excited to have her contributions on the AAIP board.

Meet Blessing Etuk, PharmD, AAIP President-Elect and an accomplished clinical pharmacy leader with over 20 years of experience in hospital practice.
A graduate of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Dr. Etuk completed her PGY1 residency at Northside Hospital Atlanta and has since served in numerous roles across medical-surgical, cardiology, internal medicine, and NICU pharmacy. She currently holds a leadership role at Northside Hospital Duluth, where she oversees unit-based pharmacists, precepts students and residents, and drives key operational initiatives, including the transition to a decentralized pharmacy model to enhance patient care and clinical efficiency.
Dr. Etuk’s dedication to leadership and service has earned her multiple recognitions, including Pharmacist of the Year (2023–2024). We are proud to have her leadership and vision guiding AAIP.

Meet Dr. Omeka Sanders, our Board Chairman and Immediate Past President of AAIP.
A proud Mercer PharmD alumna, Dr. Sanders completed her PGY1 residency at the Atlanta VA Medical Center before beginning an impactful career at Northside Hospital, serving as a Staff Pharmacist, Unit-Based Pharmacist, and Lead Pharmacist. She was named Mercer’s 2021–2022 APPE Preceptor of the Year for her commitment to student development.
Today, Dr. Sanders continues to lead and inspire as the Ambulatory Pharmacy Supervisor for Non-Oncology Infusion at Emory Healthcare. We are honored to have her guidance and leadership within AAIP.
