According to ancient Eastern beliefs, chakras are energy centers we have in our bodies; we have 7 main chakra centers that run along the spine. Each one is associated with a different color & are supported & enhanced via select crystals, foods, tea flavors, essential oils, & yoga poses.
The first of the major chakras is the Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine & is about our most basic need for safety & security. This idea is comparable to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (last image), which is a theory in psychology that is related to motivation. Maslow believed there are 5 tiers of needs that motivate us as humans, from basic physiological needs to stay alive to “higher” aspirational needs. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is displayed as a pyramid & shows us we need to meet our lower-level basic needs before we can move on to higher-level growth.
1️⃣ Physiological Needs: Includes the most essential things we need to survive, things like air, water, food, & sleep. Without these, our bodies & brains cannot function.
2️⃣ Safety Needs: After physical needs, you need to feel safe. This includes shelter, employment, resources, health, & a stable living environment. It’s about predictability & protection from harm.
3️⃣ Love & Belonging: Next, we crave connection with others. This level is about relationships, friendships, family, intimacy, & a sense of community. Humans are social creatures who need to feel loved & accepted.
4️⃣ Esteem Needs: Once you have your community, you need to feel valued within it. This includes self-respect, recognition, & feeling competent. It’s about confidence & feeling good about what you contribute.
5️⃣ Self-Actualization: The peak of the pyramid. This is the process of realizing your full potential. It’s about personal growth, pursuing your passions, & living a life that is meaningful & purposeful.
Our Root Chakra (Muladhara in Sanskrit) corresponds to Maslow’s first 2 levels. When your Root Chakra is balanced, you feel stable & secure. This solid footing allows you to climb the rest of Maslow’s pyramid towards a life of purpose & self-actualization. 🏔️
