Alyssa Johnson I'm a former attorney who now helps lawyers love their work.

Using heart-centered, spiritual, and embodiment tools, I help lawyers find more joy in their lives and ultimately find love for the work they're here to do.

The pic of me in a gray tank top popped up in my FB memories from a year ago.
The pic of me in a black tank top was taken about 5 minutes ago at my fave coffee shop.

My hair’s longer and a lot more gray-silver now. I’m also 10 pounds thinner and have more fine lines on my forehead and around my eyes. I’m more toned now and have more muscle than I did a year ago.

What are some of the differences you see from last year to now? For those of you who know me better, have you noticed any changes in my personality in the past year?

Some of my changes have been part of getting older (hair color, fine lines, wrinkles) and others have been intentional (weight loss, increase in muscle mass). Anyone who knows me well knows I take my health veryyyy seriously. I spend a fortune on health and wellness practitioners because I need a lot of support to feel optimal. And I expect to spend a lot more money on wellness resources going forward as I continue aging, evolving, and needing additional support.

I’m launching an intentionality class for September for you to get clear in your intentions for each day and move from that place of clarity.

We start next Monday. Class is $100 right now and goes up to $200 on Thursday.

Tonight I’m attending my first legal advice clinic through Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas.

I’ve been granted permission by the Texas Bar to provide legal services in a very narrow capacity. I’m allowed to do pro bono work through an approved legal services organization.

I’m not licensed in Texas and can’t take on cases outside of this narrow exception.

But I’m really excited for this opportunity. I’m shadowing an attorney tonight since it’s been so long since I’ve practiced. My legal skills are rusty.

In August, I’ll work with folks directly who desire pro bono services.

When I practiced law, my happiest moments were - by far - the pro bono work I did. I felt like I was putting my law license to good use and creating positive change in the world.

I don’t practice anymore, but now I work with lawyers to help them create better work-life boundaries and enjoy life more. DM me for details.

I just read some articles on race literate psychotherapy. I have a number of friends who have counseling degrees and I've had really interesting convos with them about psychology and how Western psychology is rooted in White Eurocentric studies, experiences and perceptions.

A lot of what I learned in the articles is applicable to the legal profession. Becoming more mindful of Whiteness, the White experience, the experiences of BIPOC, and how racism can show up whether we intend for it to or not.

I really enjoy race literacy work. Learning where my own racism is blinding me and hurting people of Color is important to me. This wasn't always the case. Certainly the first couple of years of my race literacy journey were very painful as I continually bumped up against my White supremacist beliefs and values.

I had a ginormous fragile White woman ego and I had to work with it.

But with the 4 Cs - clarity, conviction, courage and compassion - I kept at the race literacy work and my ego calmed down as my self-awareness grew.

I'm starting a book club for White women lawyers because I think we're extremely powerful. And if we can switch our allegiance to people of Color rather than White supremacy, I think White supremacy will collapse.

I'm thinking we'll read one book every couple of months.

I'm certain that I want us to read:

1. My Grandmother's Hands by Resmaa Menakem

2. White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo

3. Antagonists, Advocates and Allies: The Wake-up Call Guide for White Women Who Want to Become Allies with Black Women by Catrice M. Jackson. *True story - I threw this book across the room after reading the first chapter and I spent the better part of a weekend crying in bed. It took me a couple of years to pick it back up and read it. And I'm so glad I did. It's phenomenal.

I'm open to suggestions from people for other books to read.

Feel free to comment below on books that have deeply impacted you on your race literacy journey.

Trying to put myself into a contortionist position to show off my new Asics tennies

I also bought Feetures running socks as I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ running socks and won’t wear any other type of sock to work out in.

I’m a lawyer who takes care of myself! I value my heart, mind and body and spend money to ensure I feel my best. Period.

I help lawyers value themselves, too. DM me to learn more about my work.

I upleveled my filming area.

It's something I've been wanting to do for awhile, but after last week's incredible training "How to Communicate More Effectively on Video Calls" with I took immediate action to improve my filming area.

I bought a second ring light, which greatly helps my lighting.

I also bought a really big green screen as I use a virtual background for Zoom and I think it looks terrible when my body disappears from the screen.

Finally, I invested in a PlexiCam device, which holds your we**am at eye level so you're looking into people's eyes when you speak. Because I have a large desktop computer, the we**am I use (or the built-in camera) attaches to the top of my screen so I'm not looking at the viewer at eye level. I'm looking up from their perspective. This probably makes them a bit nauseous after awhile.

And because the PlexiCam is clear, I can see my screen behind it so I'll be able to read content that I'm sharing with people.

It's all about
It's also about making the experience as pleasant as possible for people.

These upgrades are in perfect timing as I'm filming back-to-back continuing legal education (CLE) courses on Monday on race literacy for Lawline and then

Did you know that stressed spelled backwards is desserts?!

I love that and I remember it when I'm feeling stressed. I ask myself "how can I take this stress and find the dessert in it??" It helps my system calm down a bit.

I'm teaching a free hour-long webinar on Tuesday night (March 1st) called From Stressed to Desserts! I'll be talking about stress management tools and how to find all of the desserts in the stress sandwich that so many of us experience.

The webinar's at 7pm est / 6pm cst / 4pm pst and will last an hour.

I'll be sending out the Zoom info to my email list so sign up for my list for details.
