No one asks Dad how he’s doing.

They ask about Mom. How she’s recovering. How she’s coping.
They ask about the baby. Weight, stats, milestones, next appointment.

They ask Dad how work is. How Mom is. How the baby is.
But no one really asks Dad how he is doing.
Behind the “I’m good” is a guy who hasn’t slept in days, who Googled things at 2am he wishes he could un-Google, who held it together in the NICU hallway so his partner didn’t have to, who feels guilty for feeling overwhelmed because he wasn’t the one in the hospital bed.

To all the dads carrying it quietly - I see you.
It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to say this is hard. You matter in this story too.

The NICU is a battlefield.

No one tells you that when you become a parent.
There’s no gunfire, but there are alarms. Constant alarms. Monitors beeping like sirens, nurses moving like a special ops team — calm, fast, precise.

Every incubator is a foxhole.
Every tiny baby inside is fighting a war they never signed up for.

In the NICU, you learn a new language of war:
-Ventilators are life support.
-A gram gained is territory won.
-A stable night is a battle survived.

The soldiers? They wear scrubs, not camo. Neonatologists, respiratory therapists, NICU nurses who hold your child when you can’t.
The warriors? They weigh 2 pounds. Covered in wires, fighting with every breath.
And the parents? We stand at the bedside feeling completely helpless and completely ready to go to war for them at the same time. We learn to sleep in chairs. To pump at 3am. To celebrate a poopy diaper like it’s a victory parade. Because it is.
You come home from the NICU different. You have seen how fragile and how ferocious life can be in the same moment.
If you’re in the trenches right now — I see you. Keep holding the line. One hour, one day, one gram at a time.
