即興example: 分享一個10年前的舊影片。是我兒子吃完了很好吃的早午餐之後，開始唱起歌來。然後Gabriel馬上拿烏克麗麗來幫他伴奏（所以要學不同的和弦進行，馬上就可以給一個structure 讓個案自由發揮）。他的貓頭鷹也和他對唱起來！就這樣一起隨性的創作了這一首可愛的歌～
（想練習臨床即興的學員們。可以找一個伴，選幾個和弦進行，然後開始即興對唱！）

I found this precious video of an improvised song that Eli initiated, inspired by a yummy lunch—another sweet example of improvisation for my students! 😄
As soon as Eli came up with a little melody, Gabriel immediately grabbed the uke to accompany him, while Dr. Who joined in with a counter-melody to keep the musical engagement going.
And just like that, the three of them co-created this adorable little impromptu song. 🥰
That’s what’s great about improvisation: it’s not about perfection, but about spontaneity, listening, responding, connecting, and co-creating together in the moment. 💛

耶～🎉 加場的臨床即興工作坊再次圓滿落幕！
這次剛從泰國回來挺著腸胃炎上場，但感謝腎上腺素幫忙，讓我還是可以滿滿的投入和享受～
每一次和大家一起透過即興探索、學習，與學員們的回饋都讓我很感動。也覺得很幸福可以做一個又有意義也充滿創意的職業。

Music and singing are powerful tools for building trust, fostering connection, and helping the nervous system experience safety.

Music engages the limbic system—the network of brain regions involved in emotion, memory, and motivation—which is one reason it can help us feel understood without words. Gentle, soothing singing also signals safety through tone, rhythm, and predictable vocal patterns, helping calm the nervous system and reduce amygdala activation—our brain's threat detection system.

As a music therapist, I've sung to people across the lifespan—from premature infants in the NICU, where I also taught parents to sing to their babies during skin-to-skin contact, to children, teens, adults, all the way to individuals at the end of life.
I've also sung to all three of my children everyday. And now, our little hedgehog, Bumju, also seems to enjoy it! 🦔🥰

No matter what you think about your singing voice, to your child, it is the most familiar, beautiful, and comforting sound in the world. ❤️ So don't be afraid to sing. You don't have to sing perfectly. Simply humming softly or singing your favorite songs together can become a powerful way to create safety, build trust, and deepen connection.
I hope you'll invite more music into your everyday life. Let music become a language of presence, co-regulation, and deeper connection. ❤️

音樂和歌唱是建立安全感、信任與連結的催化劑～
這是因為，音樂會直接活化大腦的邊緣系統（limbic system）——也就是負責情緒、記憶與動機的重要腦區。因此，我們常常能透過音樂感受到被理解，即使沒有任何言語交流也是如此。
而當我們用溫柔的聲音哼唱時，聲音中的音色、節奏與韻律會向神經系統傳遞「你是安全的」訊息，幫助降低杏仁核（amygdala，負責偵測威脅的警報系統）的活化，進而讓身心慢慢放鬆、感到安全。

在音樂治療的工作生涯中，我用音樂與歌唱陪伴過許多走在不同生命階段的人——從新生兒加護病房的早產兒，（還有教導父母在袋鼠式照護時唱歌給寶寶聽），到兒童，青少年，成人，一路到陪伴安寧醫療中的病人走完人生最後一段旅程。音樂能夠很快的降低恐懼，疼痛與孤獨，且給與對方安慰，快樂，與力量。

我的三個孩子小時候也都是在我們每天的歌聲中，安心入睡的～而現在晚上孩子們會跟我一起唱歌給我們的小刺寶聽，感覺他也陶醉其中呢～🥰

不管你覺得自己唱得好不好，對你的孩子而言，你的聲音永遠都是最熟悉、最美、也最有安全感的聲音。❤️
所以，別害怕唱歌。不用唱得完美，也不用在意音準。輕輕地哼唱、一起唱喜歡的歌，都能成為建立安全感、信任與連結的珍貴時刻。

When people think about the drums or drumming, they often think about music. As a music therapist, I also think about neuroscience.

Rhythm provides structure for the nervous system. It helps organize timing, attention, movement, and coordination while simultaneously creating opportunities for connection and expression.

This is especially powerful for individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. While language and memory may become more difficult to access, rhythmic abilities often remain available much longer.

I've seen a simple drum pattern support movement, encourage engagement, create moments of joy, and facilitate meaningful connection between people who may struggle to communicate verbally.

One of my favorite things about rhythm is that it doesn't require words, it simply invites participation.

One of the most remarkable things about Alzheimer's disease is that while memory for names, conversations, and recent events may decline, musical memory often remains surprisingly intact.

Families often describe moments when a loved one who struggles to remember daily details suddenly sings every word to a favorite song from decades ago.

Why does this happen?

Music activates multiple regions of the brain at the same time—including areas involved in emotion, movement, attention, memory, and social connection. Some of these networks remain accessible longer than the areas responsible for forming new memories.

This means that music can sometimes become a bridge back to connection.

A song may spark recognition.
A melody may evoke emotion.
A rhythm may encourage movement.

As a music therapist, I have witnessed moments where a familiar song created connection when conversation could not.

These moments remind us that people are so much more than their diagnosis.
Sometimes, when words fade, music still remains.

I grew up in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States when I was 14 years old.

When people talk about immigration, they often focus on opportunity, resilience, and adaptation. Those are certainly part of the story.

But there is another part we don't talk about enough.

Grief.

The grief of leaving behind family, friends, familiar places, and a sense of belonging.
The grief of losing a language that once allowed you to express yourself effortlessly. Of feeling misunderstood, not only linguistically, but emotionally.

The grief of missing traditions, holidays, foods, rituals, and cultural experiences that helped shape your identity.

And sometimes, the grief of living between cultures. Feeling connected to multiple worlds while also feeling like you don't fully belong in either one.

For many immigrants, these losses are invisible. They are rarely acknowledged because they don't fit the way we typically think about grief.

But grief isn't only about death.

Sometimes grief is about change.
Sometimes grief is about distance.
Sometimes grief is about becoming someone new while still missing who you used to be.

If this resonates with your experience, I want you to know that you're not alone.

There is room to honor both the beauty and the difficulty of your journey.

One of the most beautiful aspects of music therapy is witnessing how music can continue to create connections even when memory and language become more difficult.

Research consistently shows that music therapy can support emotional well-being, social engagement, communication, and quality of life for individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Music engages multiple areas of the brain simultaneously, making it uniquely positioned to access pathways that often remain available later into the disease process.

I've witnessed moments where a familiar melody sparks recognition, movement, laughter, tears, or a meaningful interaction between a loved one and family member. These moments remind us that connection doesn't disappear simply because communication changes.

Sometimes music becomes the bridge. Sometimes it becomes the conversation. Sometimes it becomes a way home.

One of the most confusing experiences for many people is knowing something logically, while feeling something completely different emotionally.

For example, I've worked with clients who understand that feedback at work is a normal part of professional growth. Yet a simple comment from a supervisor can trigger overwhelming anxiety, shame, or self-doubt.

Why?

Because traumatic memories are often stored differently than ordinary memories.

When an experience is overwhelming, the brain may not fully process it. Instead, pieces of the experience, including emotions, body sensations, and beliefs, can remain "stuck" in the nervous system.

The result is that a present-day situation can activate an old memory network. Even though your thinking brain knows you're not in danger, your body responds as if the past is happening all over again.

EMDR helps the brain process and integrate these memories so they no longer carry the same emotional charge. The memory doesn't disappear. The goal isn't to erase your story.

The goal is to help your nervous system recognize that it happened and it is no longer happening now.

After long days of teletherapy sessions and admin work, I often notice headaches, a sore back, and tight shoulders and neck.
So I started taking 5-minute dance breaks between sessions.
