He removed one kind of animal from a patch of shoreline. Seven other
species disappeared.

In 1963, ecologist Robert Paine began a deliberately simple experiment
on the wave-beaten coast of Washington. He chose neighboring stretches
of rocky intertidal habitat. One remained untouched. From the other,
he repeatedly pried away the ochre sea stars and threw them farther
out into the water.

The sea stars were predators. They wrapped their arms around mussels,
pulled the shells apart with hundreds of tube feet and digested the
animal inside. If nature were a simple contest between killers and
victims, removing them should have made the shore gentler—and perhaps
more abundant.

Instead, mussels spread across the rocks. Freed from one of their
major predators, they occupied more and more of the limited space.
Other organisms lost the surfaces they needed to attach, feed and
survive. In Paine’s original account, the experimental community fell
from fifteen primary space-holding species to eight. The neighboring
control area retained its diversity.

The animal that ate others had been protecting room for them.

Paine later used the image of a keystone: the relatively small stone
at the top of an arch whose removal can destabilize the whole
structure. The term “keystone species” changed ecology because it
challenged the assumption that the importance of a being can be
measured by its size or abundance. Some lives shape the conditions
under which many other lives remain possible.

The experiment was real, influential and limited. It occurred in a
particular intertidal system, and later ecologists have refined how
broadly its conclusions should be applied. But its central lesson
survived: relationships can matter more than head counts. A predator
can increase diversity. Removal can look like mercy at the level of
one encounter while becoming loss across an entire community.

Human beings often judge a relationship by looking at only the most
visible moment: the sea star consuming the mussel. The shore asks us
to widen the frame. Life is not organized into isolated heroes and
villains. It is a web of pressures, openings and limits, and sometimes
the creature that appears to take is also the creature making space.
