Our colleagues at Social Policy and Development Centre estimate:

- 34% of consumption (or 18.3 billion sticks) are illicit, including 7.2 billion sticks produced locally, and
- revenue lost from illicit trade amounts to Rs 115.6 billion, not Rs 400 billion as claimed by industry.

- reduce cigarette consumption 16%,

- decrease adult smoking prevalence 2%, averting >292,000 premature deaths.

🇲🇪 In , the share of illicit consumption decreased from ~50% in 2019 to ~25% in 2022, and excise tax revenue increased from €46.3 million to €119.2 million b/w 2019 & 2024 📈

Under the compromise text, UPCT Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena finds that:

- very few Member States would need to raise their minimum tax in 2028 & the required adjustment would be much smaller, and
- the minimum tax would not keep up with higher inflation rates.

🆕 from Ekonomický ústav SAV finds that:

- consumers perceive e-ci******es, HTPs, & ****ne pouches as more attractive in Slovakia compared to the EU average, yet
- consumers support flavor bans & other regulations.

Among youth, use is also rising, with initiation from ages 13 to 16 & higher rates among girls than boys 📊

An alternate ***co tax system in 🇧🇩 would improve & raise tax revenues in FY 2026-27 📈

Specifically, 🆕 estimates that this proposal would:

1️⃣. encourage nearly 0.5 million adults to quit smoking & prevent more than 372,000 youth from initiating use, saving over 371,700 lives in the long-term; &
2️⃣. generate more than BDT 85,000 crore in ***co tax revenue, BDT 44,000 crore more than the previous fiscal year.
