3 more tips for optimizing the function of the amazingly designed and created digestive system!
1. Goodbye and Good Riddance! Processed "food" is has been changed from its original and whole state to something that is not whole or intact and has been modified for a variety of reasons. These products are typically found in the middle of the grocery store and are packaged for long shelf-life and visual appeal. Processed "food" is challenging for our digestive system because the poor (or non-existent) nutritional value of these foods robs the body of the nutrients need to simply digest them! In other words, the body uses its storehouse of nutrients and energy to TRY to process something that gives it nothing in return. Stick to whole foods and get the WHOLE benefit.
2. Chew on This. Have you heard the saying, "chew each bite 30 times"? In fact, there is much wisdom in the old saying. The mouth is the first stop in the digestive system and it accomplishes several important tasks! The teeth are perfectly designed to bite, grind, and crush food into a bolus (food ball). Saliva contains important enzymes that begin the process of breaking down carbohydrates while the food is still in the mouth! The addition of saliva helps turn food into a slippery and nearly liquid substance that slips down the esophagus on its way to more digestion. Take your time. Enjoy the blessing of good food. Chew it longer than "just enough to gulp it down". Your gut will thank you and so will your health.
3. Friendly Fiber. Fiber is critical to a healthy colon by producing soft and bulky stool that moves through the colon at the correct speed. Fiber also dilutes the effects of toxic compounds and it removes "bad" bacteria from the colon. both types of fiber are important: soluble fiber absorbs toxins and unneeded cholesterol, and insoluble fiber hastens elimination.
