Is your immune system is destroying the cells that produce insulin? This process continues regardless of lifestyle. Regardless of medication compliance. Regardless of how hard you try. Trust me...I have been through it!

A misdiagnosis does not just mean the wrong label on your chart.
It means years of treatment designed for the wrong condition.

Metformin reduces insulin resistance. Diet changes lower glucose load. Weight loss improves sensitivity.

None of these stop an autoimmune attack on your beta cells.
The misdiagnosis is not the end of the story. But understanding what it cost — and what is still possible — starts with getting the right information.

DM me the word CHECKLIST and I will send you the free diabetes misdiagnosis checklist.

A1C Rising Despite Doing Everything Right? — Could It Be LADA?

Here are four questions that every person diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes deserves to have answered:
1. Were you tested for GAD antibodies?
2. Was your C-peptide level checked to assess insulin production?
3. Do you have any personal or family history of autoimmune conditions?
4. Were you lean or normal weight at the time of diagnosis?

If the answer to any of these is no — or I don't know — that is not the end of the conversation. That is the beginning of a better one.

LADA — Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults — is identified through testing that most standard Type 2 workups never include. You can ask for it. And you should.

If your A1C is even a little abnormal this is for you. 🫵

Here are three questions to ask yourself:
1. Was I tested for GAD antibodies?
2. Was my C-peptide level checked to assess insulin production?
3. Do I have any personal or family history of autoimmune conditions?

If the answer to question 1 and 2 is no — or the answer to question three is yes — that is not the end of the conversation. That is the beginning of a better one.

If you have one autoimmune condition, your immune system has already shown it will turn on itself.

Thyroid disease. Celiac. Lupus. Rheumatoid arthritis???

Any of these in your history significantly raises your risk for LADA — Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults.

And yet when a patient with Hashimoto's gets a diabetes diagnosis, almost no one connects those dots.

LADA is autoimmune diabetes. One autoimmune condition frequently accompanies another. If you have been diagnosed with Type 2 and you also have a history of autoimmune disease — this is a conversation worth having with your doctor.

This continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is the most powerful tools I use for understanding my body!

A continuous glucose monitor does not just tell you your blood sugar. It shows you the story behind it. The spike after certain foods🧁The drop during a walk 🚶‍♀️The overnight fluctuations 💤The cortisol response to a stressful morning🤪

For someone newly diagnosed with an autoimmune disease or Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults— where glucose patterns can be unpredictable and the relationship between food, stress, sleep, and blood sugar is still being understood — this real-time data is invaluable!!! It removes guesswork. It gives you and your care team something concrete to work with. And it helps you understand your body rather than just react to it. If your doctor has not yet mentioned a CGM — ask. It is one of the first tools worth discussing after a LADA

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults affects an estimated 1 in 10 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

That is not rare. That is millions of people. The difference between rare and underdiagnosed is awareness. LADA is autoimmune diabetes that develops slowly in adults — and because it mimics Type 2 at first, the specific tests that would identify it almost never get ordered. Both are simple blood draws. Neither requires specialist access. The barrier is not medical capability. It is awareness — among patients and providers alike. That is what LADA Aware exists to change.
