Day 16: Thankful

Well, as much as we dislike type 1 diabetes itself, it would be a lie to say that it hasn’t brought anything wonderful into our lives or that there aren’t things to be thankful for.

We are beyond thankful for our beautiful boy who has become a true warrior against this disease and an inspiration to us and others. We are thankful die the technology that accompanies this disease and for the continual research and developments. We are thankful for the community and friendships we have made. We are thankful for everyday that we get to connect with others, ourselves , our families and children.

I feel so bad that I dropped the ball with posting! So sorry guys. This has been quite a week! I’ll touch on the days I’ve missed

Day 9: Diabuddies
These are friends that also have diabetes and are there for each other with support and friendship. Hayden has met so many and I know he feels incredibly lucky to have that.

Day 10: Pump/CGM
Hayden uses the Omnipod pump which administers his insulin directly into him. He’s also uses Dexcom which is a continuous glucose monitor that lets us know every minute of the day what his blood sugar is.

Day 11: misconceptions
There are are sooooo many. Type 1 Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar but is caused by the body attacking its own pancreas.
Type 1’s can eat sugar! They can’t eat anything that anyone else can but just have to give the correct amount of insulin to take care of it. Type 1 is not easy. It’s incredibly complicated and intricate.

Day 12: Bolus Worthy Treat
While type 1’s can eat anything they want, some big sugary desserts can be harder to manage but you do the best you can and dive into that treat because you deserve it! 🙌🏻 Hayden’s favorite treat is by far Ice cream!

Day 13: Insulin
Insulin is what the pancreas makes in your body to properly manage sugar. In a type 1 diabetic, their pancreas does not work and Insulin must be injected into the body from an outside source. Without insulin, they will die.

Day 14: Greater Than gear pic. I’ll post one with the pics

Day 15: Support
Support is so paramount for individuals with type 1 diabetes and for their families. It’s an exhausting, frustrating, scary, emotional, so full of ups and downs (literally) and it helps to know you’re not alone. This community has given me some of my most cherished friendships and we are so grateful for all of you out there. We are here for you as well in any way that we can.

Day 8: EXERCISE

Type 1 Diabetes and exercise can be a complicated thing. Exercise can cause blood sugars to drop rapidly so it’s important to always have sugar or glucose on hand to either stave off a low or treat one. If your blood sugars are a little on the higher side, exercise can be a healthy tool to bring blood glucose numbers back into range. It’s very important to know where your blood sugar is when about to exercise. Hayden is an active and wild normal 9 year old. He loves to run, ride bikes and wrestle and we always have his favorite candies and juice nearby.

Day 7 : free food

Now 4 years into diagnosis, free food has changed for us. When he was first new to it, lots of low carb foods hardly affected his blood sugars at all. But now, he can eat 2 carbs and go up 50 pts! But free foods generally refers to low carb or no carb foods that you can eat that don’t affect the blood sugar much

REPOST FROM 3 years ago. He was so little!

Day 6 Greater Than Challenge : Struggle

I could name a thousand struggle with this disease literally but I’ll just name a few.

1) his sore finger tips from multiple pokes a day
2) piercing his skin multiple times a day for insulin shots. Even though he’s used to it, it still hurts
3) inability to focus, control mood and temperament when blood sugar high
4) inability to function or when low. Seeing your child on the brink of unconsciousness and being scared this is the time it won’t come up
5) managing care while at school and missing class for daily Nurse visits
6) feeling different or embarrassed in front of peers
7) carb counting every single thing that goes into their mouths
8) having to guess carb counts while out at restaurants and sometimes guessing wrong
9) insurance, dr appts, financial burden
10) technology failures at times
11)The amount of planning required every time you leave the house
12) poor sleep (for Type 1 and their Parents)
13)depression and frustration that can happen for T1’s
14) others not understanding the disease and what my son goes through and what our entire family goes through every single day
15) having to tell your son there is no cure yet and he might have to do this every day for the rest of his life
16) there is NO BREAKS. You have to be alert and always ready to deal with the curve balls it throws.

Day 4-5: Supply Kit & Low Treatment

Sorry I missed day 4 for the supply kit! Hayden’s kit consists of alcohol swabs, finger pricker, test strips, pump controller, Dexcom receiver, candy to treat lows, extra pump, extra Dexcom and insulin and syringes in case pump fails . It’s like packing for a trip every time you leave the house!

Lows/treatments

Hayden’s blood sugar needs to be kept between 80-120 optimally. When he goes below 80 we are alarmed that we need to treat him and bring his blood sugar up. He will feel shaky, pounding and rapid heart, faintish, sweaty and scared. When he’s dropping fast the best go-to for us is orange juice as it hits the system fast! BUT Hayden is not a bit fan so we use apple juice, milk, and candy. And when in a pinch you use whatever you can.

This pic was from a couple weeks ago when Hayden went low in the middle of the night while sleeping. Our phones alarmed and I jumped up and ran to his room with a juice box that he instinctively drinks when I place the straw in his mouth and never wakes. I save his life time and time and time again/

Day 3: DAILY LIFE

Hayden’s daily life (and ours) consists of all the regular things that everyone else’s does except we’ve got more to keep track of, more to worry about and more manage!

Carb counting every single thing that goes into his body and dosing correctly with insulin. Measuring correct portions of foods. Replacing punks or Dexcoms. Finger pricks to check his blood sugar. Making sure every time we leave the house we have all needed supplies.

And today for instance, picked up Hayden from his dads house and then when we were almost home (30 min later) Jauden realized he forgot his pump which controls insulin going into his body. He can’t live without it do we turned the car around with groceries getting warm in the trunk, cranky hungry kids and an apologetic Hayden to drive back down and get it.

Today’s daily life has been a tad frustrating 🤦‍♀️ but, we’ve got this 🙌🏻💪🏻💙

DIAGNOSIS-

The day Hayden was diagnosed was a whirlwind. I took him in to the dr because of his strange symptoms and constant thirst and unrination that I thought was due to a bladder infection or something minor.

I could tell something was wrong when the dr came in and wanted to prick his finger (which totally confused me because what does that have to do with peeing a lot?) The meter had 2 letters on it instead of numbers and it read HI...I had no idea what that meant but by the looks on the nurses face I knew it wasn’t good. The dr asked me to step into the hall for a minute while the nurse stayed with Hayden in the exam room.

Her eyes watered and my hands began to shake and my pulse pounded in my ears..”your son has Type 1 Diabetes and you need to go to the hospital immediately... the floor seemed to drop from beneath me and my vision blurred...”can you call his dad and your husband to come meet you there?” I managed to utter out a quiet “yes” in between my gasps.

We were taught how to check blood sugar, count carbs, treat lows, highs..how to give an an emergency shot of glucagon. We also learned how deadly this disease can be and how damaging it is on your bodies organs if it managed well. First finger pricks we had to hold him down screaming and crying, and then we’d all end up crying. His first insulin shots were much of the same...we hid our tears for the most part and tried to be strong for him but once in our bedroom, behind closed doors, we wept. And I don’t think I stopped crying for a good 3 months.

This diagnosis changes your views, your ambitions, your path, you whole life. Our family is closer than ever and although we will not let this diagnosis define us, we have embraced it and will fight it everyday.

NBD, just keeping my kiddo alive while he sleeps peacefully. I love that he can drink juice without waking up. And thank goodness for Dexcom because he doesn’t feel loss at all when he’s asleep.

Do your kids feel theirs when asleep?
