"My team won't do what I ask, so I HAVE to micromanage!"
Sound familiar? 🤔 I hear this from frustrated leaders all the time. But here's the truth: Micromanaging is rarely the solution; it's often part of the problem. 🎤
Here’s why:
1. Micromanaging breeds resentment. If team member feels constantly monitored or second-guessed, it can crush their motivation and creativity. They can become passive and disengaged, doing the bare minimum just to avoid your scrutiny.
2. Micromanaging stifles growth. Your team members will not be encouraged or learn to take initiative and solve problems on their own if your main interaction is to tell them how they did it wrong or you're always swooping in to fix things. You're robbing them of valuable learning opportunities and hindering their professional development.
3. Micromanaging is a time suck. How much of your precious time and energy are you wasting on constantly checking up on your team? I know it’s frustrating. And there is a better way.
So, what's the alternative?
Empowerment, not control. 💪
Instead of focusing on what your team isn't doing, shift your attention to what they can do.
• Communicate and collaborate: Make sure you make your expectations explicit. Bring your team to the table when setting goals and creating action plans. Check in consistently.
• Teach and support: Ensure your team has the tools, knowledge, and guidance they need to fulfill their roles.
• Give them space to shine: Once they are prepared, trust your team to do their jobs. Delegate tasks that challenge them and allow them to grow.
• Celebrate their wins: Recognize and reward their efforts, even small contributions. People do better when they feel better.
Leadership isn’t only about delegating or giving direction. It's about mentoring, inspiring and empowering your team to fulfill their purpose in your company. When your leadership style fosters a culture of recognition, mastery, autonomy, and purpose your team will surprise you with their initiative, creativity, and commitment. ✨
