I struggle much more than anyone notices. Probably because I struggle more than I’ve been able to open up about recently. It’s been a strange reality to feel more quiet about how I’m moving through life, or to feel unsure of how to even express the multitudes I’m holding. But it’s been a really challenging two years.

Depression and anxiety have been such a major part of my postpartum experience. But neither are new to me. I’ve been navigating both since I was a child. It’s been about 8 years of genuine work to address and resolve those things. Real and genuine meaning making choices that go against every part of me that wants to run, hide, numb, escape or fight my way out of what I’m feeling. That was how I coped for a really long time. It’s been an intense journey of learning to sit with my feelings, my self, my experiences, my traumas, and with all of the truths that shade the brightness of life and this world.

I don’t feel in the dark now. At least not anymore. Though this year in particular has been incredibly tough. Anxiety in particular has been really pushing me to edges I’m so uncomfortable living on. I’m trying to love and trust even my new edges while finding my way back to center as much as I can.

When asked me to do this shoot, it was an immediate yes because she’s amazing. When she told me what she was going through with anxiety, and that it led her to make changes in her life to support herself through it, it hit home and resonates deeply. Her experiences led her to yoga and a real effort in making regular practice a thing. That’s helped her find ground and center. And she looked to me as a representative of that way of life. As true as that is & has been for over two decades, it really hasn’t felt that way. The time we spent together for this shoot plus the conversations we shared (and a few tears, a sunset, and really good Thai food) all ended up illuminating parts of myself I’d forgotten. And it reminded & inspired me to practice more. Which I’m happy to report I’ve been keeping up since 😌

here’s to remembering that we’re never as far away from ground and center as it can feel when things are hard. and we can always try.

parenting is one big practice of radically surrendering and accepting while figuring out how to make moves you’ve never made before at any given moment- IN the moment

when Bodhi was born we were really leaning heavy into all of the resources that I’m so glad exist and were definitely helpful in ways- but also limited our ability to really sync up with Bodhi instead of trying to make him sync up with suggestions, advice, and schedules that weren’t making sense

as soon as we shifted away from relying on outside sources of information and practiced tuning into the cues and signals that Bodhi was giving us, things immediately changed and it was easier to ride the waves of experience with him. Even when those waves were really intense and turbulent.

This is like one very, very big yoga practice. Forcing things to be what they aren’t just never really works. Like forcing a body into a posture that is pushing the limits or range beyond its capacity. We practice following the cues but only to the extent that they help us align with where we are at the moment. Not where we wish we were or hope to be or even achieve. And we actually have to meet that moment to know what moving authentically will really mean.

For us, parenting became a smoother and easier experience when we started to fully embrace whatever Bodhi was going through. And honestly, what *we* were going through too. I’ve caught myself so many times over the last 20 months slipping into thoughts and feelings about the kind of “lifestyle” I thought I’d be keeping up or type of parent I assumed I’d be based on who I was and what felt good before actually becoming a parent of a real, live human baby. I could never predict how everything new would impact me, us and how we feel about doing anything.

We follow his lead and are getting better at being real with ourselves too without comparing him or us to anyone else. Comparison doesn’t just steal joy, it really robs us of the truth and everything that truth guides us to having.

Compare less, let go more. I’m like a broken record these days. 🫶🏾

I can’t wait to be back at this Sunday morning to teach yoga and share Food for Life with the greater community 🫶🏾

I’ll be offering trauma informed, accessible yoga under a beautiful tree. Guided awareness, breath, and gentle movement techniques that we share with the Salvation Army Wellness participants weekly to help them cultivate balance and peace.

I have a massive place in my heart for this program and organization. Working with them for the last 3 years has been a dream. Stepping away from teaching there the last few months to focus on being a mom was really hard. So I’m all the more excited and grateful to be a part of this and to continue supporting this mission.

Join us and this Sunday morning! Yoga, art, farm time, amazing people and v good energy 💚
