One of the biggest misconceptions I see in strength training is that a workout isn't effective unless you're sore afterward.

I don't chase soreness.

I chase adaptation.

Sometimes a great workout leaves you sore. Often it doesn't.

Neither tells me whether you had a productive training session.

What I care about is whether, over time, you're:
- Lifting more.
- Moving better.
- Controlling more.
- Recovering well.

An arthritic joint isn't automatically a joint that needs to be protected from all loading.

In fact, appropriately prescribed exercise can help improve strength, physical function and quality of life for people with osteoarthritis.

The key words are:
Appropriately prescribed.

That means considering symptoms, irritability, range of motion, exercise selection, load and recovery.

You don't have to treat every uncomfortable joint as if it's made of glass.

Your trunk musculature does far more than look aesthetically pleasing. This is why I use exercises such as carries, presses, hinges, squats, crawls and anti-rotation movements instead of relying solely on crunches. It's to develop the ability to control your trunk while your body produces and transfers force.

Strength isn't something you earn once and keep forever.

Like cardiovascular fitness, it requires ongoing stimulus.

That doesn't mean you have to train intensely every day.

It means giving your body a reason to maintain the adaptations you've worked to build.

Strength training is not a temporary project. It's a long-term investment.

Myth:

"I'm too old to build muscle."

Truth:

Research consistently shows adults in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond can gain significant muscle and strength through progressive resistance training.

Age changes how we train.

It doesn't eliminate your ability to improve.

Your body is far more adaptable than you've been led to believe.

Did you know?

After 40, we tend to lose power faster than we lose strength.

And that matters more than you might think.

Strength is your ability to produce force.

Power is your ability to produce that force quickly.

Think about catching yourself when you stumble, getting up from a chair, climbing stairs, lifting something overhead, or pushing off for a hike, run, or ski turn.

Those everyday moments require power.

During perimenopause, changes in hormones, muscle mass, and neuromuscular function can make maintaining power especially important.

The good news? Power is trainable.

That’s why strength training during perimenopause shouldn't just be about lifting heavier. Your program should also include intentional, appropriately progressed power work.

Don't just train to be strong. Train to stay powerful.

Your future self will thank you. 💪

Coach's Corner

The best exercise program is the one you'll still be doing next year.

Too many programs promise fast results.

Six weeks.
Thirty days.
Summer bodies.

Real strength doesn't work that way.

The goal isn't to exercise for a month.

It's to build a body that keeps saying yes to the life you want for decades.

Consistency will always beat perfection.

That's what we coach every day here at UpLift Training.

Myth:

"If it hurts, I should stop exercising."

Truth:

Pain doesn't always mean damage.

In many cases, the right exercises can actually reduce pain by improving strength, stability, and movement quality.

The key is doing the right exercises—not simply doing less.

That's why individualized coaching matters.
