Living in Central Oregon means we don't let anything stop us from enjoying our outdoor adventures—and that includes hearing loss! 🎿🚴

Whether you're skiing Mt. Bachelor or biking the Phil's Trail network, many of our patients ask: "Can I safely wear my hearing aids or cochlear implant under my helmet?"

The short answer: Yes! Here's what you need to know:

Hearing Aids Under Helmets
Both behind-the-ear (BTE) and receiver-in-canal (RIC) models work great under helmets. The key is choosing a helmet with adjustable straps that don't press directly on your devices. A soft headband or skull cap underneath provides extra cushioning and security.

Cochlear Implants & Helmets
Good news: Most modern helmets accommodate cochlear implants comfortably. The external processor sits behind your ear like a BTE hearing aid. Just ensure your helmet doesn't put pressure on the internal implant site.

Ekho tip: Go into one of the many sports shops in town and try on helmets to find one that fits snug and secure, without adding too much pressure to your head. *This is one I have had to do when I'm looking for a new helmet.*

The Bottom Line:
Don't let hearing loss keep you off the mountain or trails. You can enjoy all of Central Oregon's outdoor activities while hearing clearly and safely.
